70. On the Great Highway

1 Onward up the King’s great highway,
Upward to the promised land,
We are marching with a shout of triumph,
For the Lord of hosts is in command;
Steadily, our force increasing,
On we go with songs of joy,
For no enemy shall hold the way before us,
Neither shall they frighten or destroy.

Refrain:
Onward at the King’s command
Upward to the promised land,
Moves the mighty army of the Lord in proud array,
To victory and glory o’er the King’s highway;
Onward at the King’s command
Upward to the promised land,
Moves the mighty army of the Lord in proud array,
To victory and glory o’er the King’s highway.

2 Though the day be dark and dreary,
Tho’ the stormy winds rush by,
Yet we know the sun is brightly shining
Just beyond the clouds that veil the sky;
Onward, then, and upward, ever,
Singing, praising more and more,
Till we reach at last the promised land of beauty
And our days of marching are all o’er. [Refrain]
