63. A Vesper Song

1 When the golden sunset
Gilds the western sky,
And the lamps of evening
Stud the dome on high;
Something gently whispers,
To my heart alone,
“Hast thou been a blessing,
As the hours have flown.”

2 Saviour in thy keeping,
Gladly I resign
All I have or hope for,
To thee, Friend divine;
With my heart bowed lowly,
On thine altar laid,
Leaving it for service,
Sacrifice or aid.

3 Grant thy benediction,
Ere my eyelids close,
By thy watchful vision,
Undisturbed repose;
And when dawns the morning,
Fresh with early dew,
I’ll awake with praises,
And my vows renew.
