PXXXVIII. A Psalm of David, to bring Remembrance

1 LORD in thy wrath rebuke me not,
Nor in thine anger me chastise:
2 For fix'd in me thine arrows are
And sore thine hand upon me lies.
3 No soundness is there in my flesh,
Because thy wrath on me doth lie;
Nor in my bones is any rest,
Because of mine iniquity.

4 Because my many trespasses
Pass'd o'err my head and passing are;
And as a mighty burden, they
Too heavy press for me to bear.
5 My wounds are noisome and corrupt;
My foolishness has made them so:
6 I'm bent and greatly bowed down,
I all day long a mourning go.

7 Fill'd are my loins with loathsome sores,
And in my flesh is no sound part:
8 I weak and lonely broken am,
I roar in anguish of my heart.

[2 Part]

9 Lord, with Thee is my whole desire,
My groaning is not hid form Thee:
10 My heart pants hard, my strength all fails,
And mine eyes sight is gone from me.
11 My lover and familiar friends
Stand far off from my noisome sore;
My neighbours and my kindred dear
Aloof stand, nor come near me more.

12 Yea they who seek my life, lay snares;
And they who wish to do me wrong,
Speak mischief, and their hearts devise
Deceits against me all day long.
13 But I, as deaf, seem'd not to hear;
And silent, as one dumb was I;
14 Was like a man that did not hear,
And in whose mouth is no reply.

15 For LORD, my hope against my foes,
Is fixed wholly upon Thee;
And Thou, O Lord my God, I trust
Wilt kindly hear and answer me.
16 O hear Thou me said I, least they
should triumph over me with pride;
Themselves against me magnify
When they shall see my feet to slide.

17 For I am ready now to halt,
Thro' grief continually with me;
18 Wherefore my faults I will declare,
And for my sins will grieved be.
19 But lively are mine enemies,
Their pow'r most formidably grows;
They multiply with great encrease,
Who are without a cause my foes.

20 Yea those who ill for good return,
Are to me deadly enemies;
And thus malicious are, because
I what is good pursue and prize.
21 JEHOVAH, O forsake me not!
My God, be not far off from me!
22 O Lord, who my salvation art,
Make haste to help and set me free!
