Hymn 141

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 53:1-5 First Line: Who has believed thy word Lyrics: Who has believed thy word, Or thy salvation known? Reveal thine arm, Almighty Lord, And glorify thy Son. The Jews esteemed him here Too mean for their belief; Sorrows his chief acquaintance were, And his companion, grief. They turned their eyes away, And treated him with scorn; But 'twas their grief upon him lay, Their sorrows he has borne. 'Twas for the stubborn Jews, And Gentiles then unknown, The God of justice pleased to bruise His best-beloved Son. "But I'll prolong his days, And make his kingdom stand; My pleasure," saith the God of grace, "Shall prosper in his hand." ["His joyful soul shall see The purchase of his pain And by his knowledge justify The guilty sons of men.] ["Ten thousand captive slaves, Released from death and sin, Shall quit their prisons and their graves And own his power divine.] ["Heav'n shall advance my Son To joys that earth denied; Who saw the follies men had done, And bore their sins, and died."]

Hymn 142

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 140 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 53:6-9 First Line: Like sheep we went astray Lyrics: Like sheep we went astray, And broke the fold of God, Each wand'ring in a diff'rent way, But all the downward road. How dreadful was the hour When God our wand'rings laid, And did at once his vengeance pour, Upon the Shepherd's head! How glorious was the grace When Christ sustained the stroke His life and blood the Shepherd pays A ransom for the flock. His honor and his breath Were taken both away, Joined with the wicked in his death, And made as vile as they. But God shall raise his head O'er all the sons of men, And make him see a num'rous seed, To recompense his pain. "I'll give him," saith the Lord, A portion with the strong; He shall possess a large reward, And hold his honors long."

My Song Is Love Unknown

Author: Samuel Crossman, c. 1624-83 Meter: 6.6.6.6.4.4.4.4 Appears in 127 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 52:13 Lyrics: 1 My song is love unknown, My Savior’s love to me, Love to the loveless shown That they might lovely be. Oh, who am I That for my sake My Lord should take Frail flesh and die? 2 He came from His blest throne Salvation to bestow; But men made strange, and none The longed-for Christ would know. But, oh, my friend, My Friend indeed, Who at my need His life did spend! 3 Sometimes they strew His way And His sweet praises sing; Resounding all the day Hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” Is all their breath, And for His death They thirst and cry. 4 Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, He gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these Themselves displease And 'gainst Him rise. 5 They rise and needs will have My dear Lord made away; A murderer they save, The Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful He To suff'ring goes That He His foes From thence might free. 6 In life no house, no home My Lord on earth might have; In death no friendly tomb But what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heav'n was His home But mine the tomb Wherein He lay. 7 Here might I stay and sing, No story so divine! Never was love, dear King, Never was grief like Thine. This is my friend, In whose sweet praise I all my days Could gladly spend! Topics: Redeemer Used With Tune: LOVE UNKNOWN

I Was A Wandering Sheep

I was a wayward child, I did not love my home; I did not love my Father's voice, I loved afar to roam. 2 The Shepherd sought his sheep, the Father sought his child; they followed me o'er vale and hill, o'er deserts waste and wild: they found me nigh to death, famished and faint and lone; they bound me with the bands of love, they saved the wand'ring one. 3 Jesus my Shepherd is; 'twas he that loved my soul, 'twas he that washed me in his blood, 'twas he that made me whole; 'twas he that sought the lost, that found the wand'ring sheep, 'twas he that brought me to the fold, 'tis he that still doth keep. 4 I was a wand'ring sheep, I would not be controlled; but now I love my Shepherd's voice, I love, I love the fold. I was a wayward child, I once preferred to roam; but now I love my Father's voice, I love, I love his home.
