Now Rest Beneath Night's Shadows

Author: Paul Gerhardt Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Appears in 31 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Now rest beneath night's shadows The woodlands, fields and meadows, The world in slumber lies; But thou, my soul, awake thee, To song and prayer betake thee, Let praise to thy Creator rise. 2 The radiant sun hath vanished, Its golden rays are banished By night, the foe of day; But Christ, the Sun of gladness, Dispelling all my sadness, Within my heart holds constant sway. 3 The rule of day is over, And shining jewels cover The sky above so blue. Thus I shall shine in heaven, Where crowns of gold are given To all who faithful prove and true. 4 My body lies divested Of garments that have rested Upon this form of clay. But I in rapture ponder How Christ shall clothe me yonder With glory that endures for aye. 5 Lord Jesus, who dost love me, Thy pinions spread above me, And shield me well from harm. Let angel guards attend me And from the foe defend me, That I may rest without alarm. 6 My loved ones, rest securely, For God will keep you surely From pain and perils sore. Sweet slumbers may He send you, And may His hosts defend you With golden weapons evermore. Topics: Evening Used With Tune: INNSPRUCK Text Sources: Tr. Composite

O God, Regard My Humble Plea

Meter: 8.8.6.8.8.6 Appears in 13 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O God, regard my humble plea; I cannot be so far from Thee but Thou wilt hear my cry; when I by trouble am distressed, then lead me on the Rock to rest that higher is than I. 2 In Thee my soul hath shelter found, and Thou hast been from foes around the tow'r to which I flee. Within Thy house will I abide; my refuge sure, whate'er betide, Thy shelt'ring wings shall be. 3 For Thou, O God, my vows hast heard, on me the heritage conferred of those that fear Thy Name; a blest anointing Thou dost give, and Thou wilt make me ever live Thy praises to proclaim. 4 Before Thy face shall I abide; O God, Thy truth and grace provide to guard me in the way; so I will make Thy praises known, and, humbly blending at Thy throne, my vows will daily pay. Author: T. H. Gill, 1819-1906 Appears in 16 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lord God, by whom all change is wrought, By whom new things to birth are brought, In whom no change is known! Whate'er Thou dost, whate'er Thou art, Thy people still in Thee have part; Still, still Thou art our own. 2 Ancient of Days! we dwell in Thee; Out of Thine own eternity Our peace and joy are wrought We rest in our eternal God, And make secure and sweet abode With Thee, who changest not. 3 Each steadfast promise we possess; Thine everlasting truth we bless, Thine everlasting love, The unfailing Helper close we clasp, The everlasting Arms we grasp, Nor from the Refuge move. 4 Spirit who makest all things new, Thou leadest onward; we pursue The heavenly march sublime, 'Neath Thy renewing fire we glow, And still from strength to strength we go, From height to height we climb. 5 Darkness and dread we leave behind, New light, new glory still we find, New realms divine possess; New births of grace new raptures bring; Triumphant, the new song we sing, The great Renewer bless. 6 To Thee we rise, in Thee we rest; We stay at home, we go in quest, Still Thou art our abode The rapture swells, the wonder grows As full on us new life still flows From our unchanging God. Praise God, this hour of sorrow

Author: H. A. Brorson; J. Heerman Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Praise God, this hour of sorrow Shall bring a brighter morrow: I go to Paradise. My mother dear and father, When round my grave you gather, Lay me to rest with songs of praise. 2 What better can befall me Than that the Lord doth call me From hence, where sin holds sway? Who is on earth a stranger Must ever be in danger, Till God hath closed life's fleeting day. 3 God takes His own from anguish And pain, in which they languish Within this vale of tears, And gives them to inherit The crown that Christ did merit: The joy of heaven's eternal years. 4 I was on earth your treasure; And now I know but pleasure Ye weep in bitter woe; Believe, whate'er betideth, God's love in all abideth, And soon your tears shall cease to flow. 5 Our days the Lord appointeth, He woundeth and anointeth, He knoweth all things well. No evil He effected, No good He e'er neglected, And all His works His glory tell. 6 When ye shall see me nearing The throne of God, appearing Adorned and crowned a bride, My palms of victory swinging, 'Midst Hallelujahs ringing, In beauteous grace the Lamb beside: 7 Ye both shall rue the sadness That made you weep, and gladness E'er in your hearts shall reign. Who follows where God guideth, And takes what He provideth Shall know surcease from all his pain. 8 Farewell, I now must leave you; The grief this day doth give you Soon others, too, shall bear. Be ye to God commended; In heaven all woe is ended, And we shall meet in glory there. The silent moon is risen

Author: Matthias Claudius Appears in 3 hymnals Lyrics: 1 The silent moon is risen, The golden star-fires glisten In heaven serene and bright; The forest sleeps in shadow, And slowly off the meadow A mist si curling, silver-white. 2 The veil of night is closing Around a world reposing In calm and holy trust; It seems like one still chamber, Where weary hearts remember No more the sorrows of the dust. 3 Behold the full moon beaming! So round and fair 'tis gleaming, Yet half is hid from sight. So, oft on earth, deceive us Things that now seem so grievous, Because the half is veiled in night 4 We, poor, frail mortals, groping, Half fearing and half hoping, In darkness seek our way; Our airy cobwebs spinning With erring and with sinning, Far from the mark we stray. 5 Thy saving health, O grant us, Lord, that we ne'er may vaunt us In vain and fleeting show; But child-like and confiding, Follow Thy gentle guiding, And in Thy paths with gladness go. 6 When death comes to release us With kindly hand, and frees us Ere life's a weary load; Then, when earth's ties we sever, Take us to Thee forever, Thou kind, Thou true, Thou gracious God! 7 The night's cool breath is creeping; Brothers, in God's good keeping Your weary eyelids close. His grace from ill defend us, And peaceful slumber send us, And soothe our poor sick neighbor's woes! Topics: The Catechism Evening Used With Tune: INNSPRUCK Text Sources: Tr. Anon.
