Lord, Who at Cana's Wedding Feast

Author: Adelaide Thrupp; Godfrey Thring Meter: 14.14.14.14 Appears in 40 hymnals Scripture: John 2:1 Lyrics: 1 Lord, who at Cana’s wedding feast Didst as a Guest appear, Thou dearer far than earthly guest, Vouchsafe Thy presence here; For holy Thou indeed dost prove The marriage vow to be, Proclaiming it a type of love Between the Church and Thee. 2 This holy vow that man can make, The golden thread in life, The bond that none may dare to break, That bindeth man and wife, Which, blest by Thee, whate’er betide, No evil shall destroy, Through careworn days each care divides, And doubles every joy. 3 On those who now before Thee kneel, O Lord, Thy blessing pour, That each may wake the other’s zeal To love Thee more and more; Oh, grant them here in peace to live, In purity and love, And, this world leaving, to receive A crown of life above. To such is bless'd, their marriage day

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: John 2:1-11 Lyrics: 1 To such is bless'd, their marriage day, Who humbly to their Saviour pray, To be with them, and to attend: To be their guest, their Lord and friend. 2 God, who ordain'd our marriage state, Provides for us in ev'ry fate, To him is known all we do need, Our wants he will supply indeed. 3 Should he appear to hide his face, Yet the rich bounties of his grace Are ever present, ever near, Tho' they do not always appear. 4 The truth of this we may be taught: The miracles that Jesus wrought In Cana-town of Galilee, Sufficient proof thereof may be. 5 His counsels and his deep decrees No eye of human creature sees; His wond'rous ways are best reveal'd, Where his dear promise is fulfill'd. 6 O let us then by faith endure! Till all our trials shall be o'er, Then by experience we shall know What Jesus for his friends will do. Topics: Second Sunday after Epiphany

Come, Join in Cana's Feast

Author: Herman G. Stuempfle, Jr. b. 1923 Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: John 2:1-11 Lyrics: 1 Come, join in Cana's feast Where Christ is honored guest. He welcomes all who come to taste The wine His hands have blessed. 2 The old wine now is gone From jars that stand apart. No longer can it satisfy The yearning, thirsting heart. 3 But Christ, the Word made flesh, Bids water turn to wine. He fills our empty cups again With grace and truth divine. 4 Come, friends, and share the feast; Here drink the wine supplied By Him who is both guest and host-- For us, the crucified. 5 For now He lives and reigns Through all eternity With Father, Spirit, Three in One, The glorious Trinity. All is ready for the Feast!

Author: Frederick Pratt Green (1903-2000) Meter: 7.7.7 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: John 2:13-17 Lyrics: 1 All is ready for the Feast! Every Jew is wondering how God will liberate them now. 2 Pilate, fearful of revolt he, at all costs, must avert, puts the Legion on alert. 3 Listen! Galilean crowds hail the Man from Nazareth, Jesus, riding to his death. 4 What authority he wields! With a whip of cords he clears temple courts of profiteers! 5 Watched by priests and pharisees, all he says and all he does fans the hatred of his foes. 6 Now he gathers those he loves in a room where bread and wine turn to sacrament and sign. 7 In that dark betrayal night, moved by hope, or fear or greed, Judas sets about his deed. 8 Jesus in the olive grove, waiting for a traitor's kiss, rises free from bitterness. 9 As he wakes his comrades up torches flicker in the glen, shadows turn to marching men. 10 In that dawn of blows and lies Church and State conspire to kill, hang three rebels on a hill. 11 Innocent and guilty drown in a flood of blood and sweat, how much darker can it get? 12 How much darker must it be for a God to see and care that men perish in despair? 13 It is God himself who dies! God in man shall set us free, God as Man - and only he. 14 Let him claim us as his own, we will serve as best we can such a God and such a Man! Final verse: 15 What does our salvation cost? Jesus, we shall never know all you gave and all we owe. Topics: Christ Incarnate Passion and Death; Christian Year Holy Week Used With Tune: HEILIGER GEIST
