David McK. Williams

1887 - 1978 Person Name: David McK. William Topics: Opening Hymns Composer of descant of "NICAEA" in Hymns for the Family of God David McKinley Williams (Conductor) Born: February 20, 1887 - Carnarvonshire, Wales, UK Died: March 13, 1978 - Oakland, California, USA The Welsh-born American church musician, composer, and teacher, David McKinley Williams, began his career in church music as a chorister in the choir of the Cathedral of St. John, Denver. At the age of 13 he became the organist of St. Peter's Church, Denver. In 1908 David McKinley Williams went to New York to serve as the organist of Grace Church Chapel. He moved to Paris in 1911 for study with some of the best known French organists of the time. Upon his return, he served as organist of the Church of the Holy Communion in New York. He served in the Royal Canadian Artillery in World War I and returned to his New York position in 1920. After only six months, he was appointed organist and choirmaster of St. Bartholomew's Church, New York. He held this position until his retirement in 1947. David McKinley Williams developed one of the most outstanding music programs in the USA at St. Bartholomew's. He was head of the organ department of the Juilliard School of Music and a member of the faculty of the School of Sacred Music, Union Theological Seminary. He also served as a member of the Joint Commission on Church Music and the Joint Commission on the Revision of the Hymnal that produced The Hymnal (1940). The Hymnal 1982 uses five of his tunes, including MALABAR used with "Strengthen for Service" (Hymn 312), CANTICUM REFECTIONIS, used with "This is the hour of banquet and of song" (Hymn 316), and GEORGETOWN, used with "They cast their nets in Galilee" (Hymn 661). William Boyd Grove

Topics: The Church at Worship Opening and Morning Hymns; liturgical Opening Hymns; Opening Hymns Author of "God, Whose Love Is Reigning o'er Us" in Voices United Bishop Grove was born in Johnstown, Pa., and received his education at Bethany College (1951), Drew University (1954) and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (1978). He served as a pastor in congregations in the Western Pennsylvania Conference, and was consecrated bishop of the West Virginia Conference in 1980. After 12 years of service in this conference, he served for four years in the Albany (N.Y.) Area before retiring from the active episcopacy in 1996. The hymn "God, Whose Love is Reigning O'er Us" was written as a processional hymn for his daughter's wedding.

Meyer Lyon

Lyon was a chorister at the Great Synagogue, Duke’s Place, London, and a public singer either at Drury Lane or Covent Garden. Fred Bock

1939 - 1998 Topics: Opening Hymns Harmonizer (vs. 4) of "ITALIAN HYMN" in Hymns for the Family of God Fred Bock was born in Great Neck, New York. He played the piano at age six and organ at age twelve. He attended Ithaca College, receiving his B.A. in Music Education. He earned his Masters and did Doctoral work in Church Music at the University of Southern California. Fred Bock was one of the most recognized and respected leaders in the world of church music. He was an accomplished composer, arranger, clinician, studio musician, organist, pianist, choral director and music publisher. He was the founder and director of publications for the music publishing division of Word, Inc. and later started Gentry Publication and other publishers of church music. He was also minister of music at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, where he served for 18 years. Before that, he served as minister of music at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles for 14 years. Elizabeth Lee Smith

Allen, President of Dartmouth University, was born in 1817, and married in 1843 to Dr. H. B. Smith, who became Professor in Union Theological Seminary, New York, in 1850, and died in 1877. Mrs. Smith's hymns, including translations of "Je Te salue", “O Jesus Christus", are in Schaff's Christ in Song, 1869 and 1870. [Rev. F. M. Leona Von Brethorst

1923 - 2010 Person Name: Leona von Brethorst Topics: Opening Hymn Author of "I will enter his gates (He has made me glad)" in Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New Leona Pearl (Bruce) Von Brethorst was born in Stinking Creek, Tennessee in 1923 to Leonard and Teresa Owens Bruce. After living in Detroit for a brief period as a young adult during World War II, she moved to Long Beach, California where she met and married Robert Von Brethorst. She was an active member of Bethany Chapel where she wrote poems and songs, organized an outreach that fed the homeless, and made quilts for anyone in need. She died in 2010.

Harriet Auber

1773 - 1862 Topics: Opening Hymns Author of "With Joy We Hail the Sacred Day" in Hymns of the Christian Life Auber, Harriet, daughter of Mr. James Auber, b. in London, Oct. 4, 1773. During the greater part of her quiet and secluded life she resided at Broxbourne and Hoddesdon, Herts, and died at the latter place on the 20th Jan., 1862. Miss Auber wrote devotional and other poetry, but only a portion of the former was published in her Spirit of the Psalms, in 1829. This collection is mainly her work, and from it some useful versions of the Psalms have been taken and included in modern hymn-books, about 20 appearing in Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1866. Miss Auber's name is widely known, but it is principally through her exquisite lyric, "Our blest Redeemer, ere He breathed," and the Epiphany hymn, "Bright was the guiding star that led." (For criticism of her work, see English Psalters, §. 17.) In addition to these and other hymns by Miss Auber, which are annotated under their respective first lines, the following are also in C. David Kai

He is a graduate of the University of Toronto, the Humber College music program where he specialized in arranging and composing, and The Centre for Christian Studies. Commissioned as a diaconal minister in 1987, David served in pastoral charges in Birtle, Manitoba, Orleans, Ontario and Ajax, Ontario. David has written hymn tunes and arrangements in collaboration with authors and composers such as Ruth Duck, Linnea Good, Neil Lemke, Pat Mayberry, Jeeva Sam, Doreen Lankshear-Smith and Brian Wren. He was a member of the committee that produced the Voices United hymn book, and also provided music for the Bible Quest curriculum. His hymns and arrangements have appeared in hymn books and collections in Canada, China and the USA. As a musician, David has performed with groups and musicians such as Linnea Good, the Union United Church Gospel Choir, and in bands playing styles from calypso and reggae to Christian rock and gospel. He has served as a musician at gatherings such as Berwick Camp, International Diakonia, Bay of Quinte Conference, the Ethnic Ministries Council and General Council Youth Forum.
