Evelyn Simpson-Curenton

b. 1953 Scripture: Psalm 23:5 Arranger of "ANOINTING FALL ON ME" in Voices Together Evelyn Simpson Curenton (born 1953) is a leading African-American composer, pianist, organist, and vocalist. Simpson Curenton began piano lessons at age 5, began to perform with the Singing Simpsons of Philadelphia, a family group, and earned a B.M., Music Education and Voice from Temple University. She has been commissioned to write works for the American Guild of Organists, George Shirley, the late Duke Ellington, and her sister, the late Joy Simpson, arranged music for Kathleen Battle, Jessye Norman, and the Porgy and Bess Chorus of the New York Metropolitan Opera, and has performed with musical organizations such as Philadelphia's National Opera Ebony (later renamed Opera North). Based in the Washington, D.C., area, Curenton is Music Director of the Washington Performing Arts Society's Men and Women of the Gospel and an associate of the Smithsonian Institution. She has given lectures and participated in workshops on early 18th-century black religious music and the music of African-Americans during the Civil Rights era. --en.wikipedia.org

b. 1957 Scripture: Psalm 23:2-4 Composer of "ROSE MARY" in Glory to God David Schwoebel is Minister of Music/Composer in Residence at Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. He is a graduate of McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Voice and Organ Performance, and a Master of Church Music with an emphasis in Composition. Prior to beginning his ministry at Derbyshire in January 1997, David served churches in his hometown of Belleville, Illinois, Montgomery, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia. As an ordained minister, David administrates and oversees a comprehensive music ministry of six choral organizations, four handbell choirs, and a 32-piece orchestra. His energetic, hands-on approach to ministry finds him working each week with people of all ages, encouraging and equipping them to discover and develop their varied musical talents and skills. The MICHELLE hymn tune included in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal is named for David's wife, Michelle. The BRITTANY, ASHLEY, AND COURTNEY hymn tunes, named for their three daughters, and the ROSE MARY, HENDRICKS AVENUE, as well as an arrangement of IRBY hymn tunes, are included in the Celebrating Grace hymnal. Robert Archibald Smith

1780 - 1829 Person Name: Robert Archibald Smith, 1780-1829 Scripture: Psalm 23 Adapter of "MARTYRDOM (FENWICK)" in Singing the Faith Although largely self-taught, Robert A. Smith (b. Reading, Berkshire, England, 1780; d. Edinburgh, Scotland, 1829) was an excellent musician. By the age of ten he played the violin, cello, and flute, and was a church chorister. From 1802 to 1817 he taught music in Paisley and was precentor at the Abbey; from 1823 until his death he was precentor and choirmaster in St. George's Church, Edinburgh. He enlarged the repertoire of tunes for psalm singing in Scotland, raised the precentor skills to a fine art, and greatly improved the singing of the church choirs he directed. He was a farmer and also worked at the A & P Warehouse in Salem, OH and the Buechner Residence Hall near YSU in Youngstown, OH. He served as Fairfield Township Trustee from 1970-2001. He was a member of the Midway Mennonite Church and enjoyed writing hymns and Mennonite Church history. He died in Leetonia, OH on February 1, 2010. --See Youngstown News.
