b. 1928 Person Name: Herbert O'Driscoll (1928-) Scripture: Psalm 114 Author of "Let My People Seek Their Freedom" in Common Praise (1998) O'Driscoll, Herbert. (Cork, Ireland, October 17, 1928-- ). Anglican. Graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, 1951. Pastorates at Monkstown (Ireland), 1952-1954; Ottawa, Ontario, 1954-1957, 1962-1968; Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, 1957-1960 (naval chaplaincy); Carp, Ont., 1960-1962; Vancouver, British Columbia, (dean), 1968-1982. In 1982 he moved to Washington, D.C. to become the warden of the College of Preachers at Washington Cathedral, but returned to Canada after one year. In both his hymns and his published sermons, he uses traditional techniques to set forth contemporary concerns, so that his work is unusually approachable. --Hugh D. William Henry Monk

Brompton, London, England, 1823; d. London, 1889) is best known for his music editing of Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861, 1868; 1875, and 1889 editions). He also adapted music from plainsong and added accompaniments for Introits for Use Throughout the Year, a book issued with that famous hymnal. Beginning in his teenage years, Monk held a number of musical positions. He became choirmaster at King's College in London in 1847 and was organist and choirmaster at St. Matthias, Stoke Newington, from 1852 to 1889, where he was influenced by the Oxford Movement. At St. Matthias, Monk also began daily choral services with the choir leading the congregation in music chosen according to the church year, including psalms chanted to plainsong. He composed over fifty hymn tunes and edited The Scottish Hymnal (1872 edition) and Wordsworth's Hymns for the Holy Year (1862) as well as the periodical Parish Choir (1840-1851). Bert Polman

Dale Grotenhuis

1931 - 2012 Scripture: Psalm 114 Harmonizer of "O HEILAND, REISS DIE HIMMEL AUF" in Psalms for All Seasons Dale Grotenhuis (b. Cedar Grove, WI, 1931; d. Jenison, Mi, August 17, 2012) was a member of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal 1987 Revision Committee, and was professor of music and director of choral music at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, from 1960 until he retired in 1994 to concentrate on composition. Educated at Calvin College; Michigan State University, Lansing; and Ohio State University, Columbus; he combined teaching with composition throughout his career and was a widely published composer of choral music. He also directed the Dordt choir in a large number of recordings, including many psalm arrangements found in the 1959 edition of the Psalter Hymnal. Before coming to Dordt, Grotenhuis taught music at Christian high schools in Washington and Michigan. Under his direction, the Dordt College concert choir participated in annual tours that took members throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He loved the church and the music of the church. 1948 - 2019 Person Name: Patrick Wedd (1948-) Scripture: Psalm 114 Arranger of "ISRAEL WENT OUT FROM EGYPT" in Common Praise (1998) Patrick Wedd was an organist and choral conductor. He was born in Simcoe, Ontario. By the age of twelve he was organist and choir director in his church. He studied at the University of Toronto and U.B.C. He was music director at Vancouver's Christ Church Cathedral. In 1986 he moved to Montreal and served at Church os Saint Andrew and Saint Paul from 1986-1992, at the Church of St. John the Evangelist from 1992-1996, and at Christ Church Cathedral from 1996 to 2018.
