Gerald H. Knight

1908 - 1979 Scripture: Song of Solomon 2:4 Harmonizer of "ASH GROVE" in Glory to God Gerald Hocken Knight CBE (1908–1979) was an cathedral organist, who served at Canterbury Cathedral. Gerald Hocken Knight was born on 27 July 1908 in Par, Cornwall, and was educated at Truro Cathedral School and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was an articled organ pupil of Hubert Stanley Middleton at Truro Cathedral. He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music in 1964. Charles Albert Tindley

1851 - 1933 Person Name: Charles Albert Tindley (1851-1933) Scripture: Song of Solomon 2:1 Author of "When the storms of life are raging, stand by me" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Charles Albert Tindley was born in Berlin, Maryland, July 7, 1851; son of Charles and Hester Tindley. His father was a slave, and his mother was free. Hester died when he was very young; he was taken in my his mother’s sister Caroline Miller Robbins in order to keep his freedom. It seems that he was expected to work to help the family. In his Book of Sermons (1932), he speaks of being “hired out” as a young boy, “wherever father could place me.” He married Daisy Henry when he was seventeen. Together they had eight children, some of whom would later assist him with the publication of his hymns. Tindley was largely self-taught throughout his lifetime. He learned to read mostly on his own. After he and Daisy moved to Philadelphia in 1875, he took correspondence courses toward becoming a Methodist minister. He did this while working as a sexton (building caretaker) for the East Bainbridge Street Church. Beginning in 1885, he was appointed by the local bishop to serve two or three-year terms at a series of churches, until coming full circle to become pastor at East Bainbridge in 1902. Under his leadership, the church grew rapidly. They relocated in 1904 to the East Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church, then again in 1924 to the new Tindley Temple, where the membership roll blossomed to about ten thousand. Tindley was known for being a captivating preacher, and for also taking an active role in the betterment of the people in his community. His songs were an outgrowth of his preaching ministry, often introduced during his sermons. Tindley was able to draw people of multiple races to his church ministry; likewise, his songs have been adopted and proliferated by white and black churches alike. The songs of Charles Tindley were published cumulatively in two editions of Soul Echoes (1905, 1909) and six editions of New Songs of Paradise (1916-1941). His wife Daisy died in 1924, before the completion of the Tindley Temple. He remarried in 1927 to Jenny Cotton. Charles A. Tindley died July 26, 1933.

Carl P. Daw Jr.

b. 1944 Person Name: Carl P. Daw, Jr. (b. 1944) Scripture: Song of Solomon 2:11-12 Author of "Like the murmur of the dove's song" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Carl P. Daw, Jr. (b. Louisville, KY, 1944) is the son of a Baptist minister. He holds a PhD degree in English (University of Virginia) and taught English from 1970-1979 at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. As an Episcopal priest (MDiv, 1981, University of the South, Sewanee, Tennesee) he served several congregations in Virginia, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. From 1996-2009 he served as the Executive Director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. Carl Daw began to write hymns as a consultant member of the Text committee for The Hymnal 1982, and his many texts often appeared first in several small collections, including A Year of Grace: Hymns for the Church Year (1990); To Sing God’s Praise (1992), New Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1996), Gathered for Worship (2006). Other publications include A Hymntune Psalter (2 volumes, 1988-1989) and Breaking the Word: Essays on the Liturgical Dimensions of Preaching (1994, for which he served as editor and contributed two essays. In 2002 a collection of 25 of his hymns in Japanese was published by the United Church of Christ in Japan. Albert Allen Ketchum

1894 - 1982 Person Name: Albert A. Ketchum Scripture: Song of Solomon 2:1 Author of "Why Do I Sing About Jesus?" in Hymns of Faith Little is known about Albert Allen Ketchum, except that he was once a student at Moody Bible Institute, in Chicago, and lived at one time in Long Beach, California. While attending Moody in the early 1920′s, he wrote the words and music for a gospel song called, "Why Do I Sing About Jesus?" William Conyngham Plunket

1828 - 1897 Person Name: William Conyngham Plunket (1828-1897) Scripture: Song of Solomon 2:17 Author of "Our Lord Christ hath risen! The tempter is foiled" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Plunket, William Conyngham , D.D., 4th Baron Plunket, eldest son of John, 3rd Baron, was born in Dublin, 26 August, 1828; educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1853; and took Holy Orders in 1857. He was Precentor of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, from 1869 to 1876, when he was elected Bishop of Meath. In 1884 he was translated to the Archdiocese of Dublin. His hymn “Our Lord Christ hath risen" (Easter), was first published in the Irish Church Hymnal, 1873, in 4 st. of 7 1. It was written for that collection in 1873, to suit the tune "O Ursprung des Lebens," by T. Selle. So far as we are aware this is Lord Plunket's only contribution to hymnody.
