O little town of Bethlehem

Author: Phillips Brooks, 1835-1893 Hymnal: Common Praise #63a (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Galatians 4:19 Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by: yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 2 O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary; and, gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. 3 How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! so God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming; but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in: be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Topics: Christmas; Chirstimas Midnight Languages: English Tune Title: FOREST GREEN

When shall my labors have an end, In joy, and peace, in thee! 2 Oh, when, thou city of my God, Shall I thy courts ascend, Where congregations ne'er break up, And Sabbaths have no end? 3 There happier bowers than Eden's bloom, Nor sin nor sorrow know; Blest seats! thro' rude and stormy scenes, I onward press to you. 4 Why should I shrink at pain and woe! Or feel, at death, dismay? I've Canaan's goodly land in view, And realms of endless day. 5 Apostles, martyrs, prophets there, Around my Saviour stand; And soon my friends in Christ below, Will join the glorious band. 5 Jerusalem! my happy home! My soul still pants for thee; Then shall my labors have an end, When I thy joys shall see. Languages: English Tune Title: JERUSALEM
