Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy

1809 - 1847 Person Name: Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1800-1847) Scripture: Psalm 139 Composer of "ASAPH" in Songs of Praise with Tunes Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (b. Hamburg, Germany, 1809; d. Leipzig, Germany, 1847) was the son of banker Abraham Mendelssohn and the grandson of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. His Jewish family became Christian and took the Bartholdy name (name of the estate of Mendelssohn's uncle) when baptized into the Lutheran church. The children all received an excellent musical education. Mendelssohn had his first public performance at the age of nine and by the age of sixteen had written several symphonies. Profoundly influenced by J. S. Bach's music, he conducted a performance of the St. Matthew Passion in 1829 (at age 20!) – the first performance since Bach's death, thus reintroducing Bach to the world. Mendelssohn organized the Domchor in Berlin and founded the Leipzig Conservatory of Music in 1843. Traveling widely, he not only became familiar with various styles of music but also became well known himself in countries other than Germany, especially in England. He left a rich treasury of music: organ and piano works, overtures and incidental music, oratorios (including St. Paul or Elijah and choral works, and symphonies. He harmonized a number of hymn tunes himself, but hymnbook editors also arranged some of his other tunes into hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Paul Liljestrand

1931 - 2011 Scripture: Psalm 139:23 Composer of "CONRAD" in The Worshiping Church Dr. Paul Frederick Liljestrand was born May 15, 1931 in Montclair, NJ, died Feb 17, 2011 in Thomasville, GA. His musical gifts were recognized at an early age and he studied at The Julliard School, beginning in the Pre-College Division and continuing through the Master's Degree program. He spent two years in Japan with the U.S. Army, serving as a Chaplain's Assistant. Following this he returned to New Jersey and studied at Union Theological Seminary for a Master's Degree in Sacred Music. He also served as organist and choir director at Brookdale Baptist Church for 9 years before being called to Calvary Baptist Church in New York City where he served for thirty years. He also taught and was Chairman of the Music Department at both Northeastern Bible College and Nyack College. As the director of the Nyack Chorale, he led his students on many tours. After retiring from Calvary Baptist Church he was organist and choir director at Union Congregational Church in Montclair, NJ for nine years. In 2003 he and his wife moved to Thomasville, GA where Liljestrand became organist and choir director at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and later was Music Director at Trinity Anglican Church. Both in New Jersey and in Georgia, Liljestrand served as accompanist for many groups and professional musicians, taught piano, organ, and composition, and was a mentor to many young musicians. George Nelson Allen

1812 - 1877 Person Name: George N. Allen Scripture: Psalm 139:24 Composer of "PRECIOUS LORD" in Glory to God George Nelson Allen (1812-1871), studied at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Oh OH and with Lowell Mason in Boston. Allen gave a strong musical foundation to Oberlin College in its earliest years; in addition to being Professor of Music he also served as Professor of Geology and Natural History, Secretary and Treasurer. In 1835 he compiled The Oberlin Social and Sabbath Hymn Book, in which appeared his most well known tune MAITLAND (also known as CROSS AND CROWN or WESTERN MELODY) with the text "Must Jesus bear the cross alone?". This was adapted by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1938 for his hymn "Precious Lord, take my hand". hand." He composed anthems and wrote some additional music for Isaac Woodbury's Oratorio "Absalom." 1944 - 1992 Person Name: Skinner Chávez-Melo, 1944-1992 Scripture: Psalm 139:23-24 Arranger of "PESCADOR DE HOMBRES" in Worship and Rejoice Skinner Chavez-Melo, an organist, conductor and composer who was music director at the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan, died on Saturday at New York Downtown Hospital. He was 47 years old and lived in Manhattan. He died of spinal cancer, said his brother, Juan Francisco. Mr. Chavez-Melo was born in Mexico City, but completed his musical studies in the United States, receiving degrees at Eastern Nazarene College and the Union Theological Seminary, and pursuing further studies at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School. He toured internationally as an organist and conducted orchestras in Mexico, Brazil and the United States. As a composer, he wrote works for organ, choir and orchestra, and contributed hymn settings to several published hymnals, including those of the United Church of Christ and Yale University. He also lectured and presented workshops on Hispanic church music. Besides directing music at St. Rose, Mr. Chavez-Melo conducted the annual Singing Christmas Tree concerts at the South Street Seaport. http://www.nytimes.com/1992/01/28
