Frances Elizabeth Cox

1812 - 1897 Person Name: F. E. Cox Scripture: 1 Peter 4:13 Translator of "Oh, let him whose sorrow" in The Presbyterian Book of Praise Cox, Frances Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. George V. Cox, born at Oxford, is well known as a successful translator of hymns from the German. Her translations were published as Sacred Hymns from the German, London, Pickering. The 1st edition, pub. 1841, contained 49 translations printed with the original text, together with biographical notes on the German authors. In the 2nd edition, 1864, Hymns from the German, London, Rivingtons, the translations were increased to 56, those of 1841 being revised, and with additional notes. The 56 translations were composed of 27 from the 1st ed. (22 being omitted) and 29 which were new. The best known of her translations are "Jesus lives! no longer [thy terrors] now" ; and ”Who are these like stars appearing ?" A few other translations and original hymns have been contributed by Miss Cox to the magazines; but they have not been gathered together into a volume. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Henry Thomas Smart

1813 - 1879 Person Name: Henry Smart, 1813-1879 Scripture: 1 Peter 4:1-3 Composer of "EVERTON" in Common Praise Henry Smart (b. Marylebone, London, England, 1813; d. Hampstead, London, 1879), a capable composer of church music who wrote some very fine hymn tunes (REGENT SQUARE, 354, is the best-known). Smart gave up a career in the legal profession for one in music. Although largely self taught, he became proficient in organ playing and composition, and he was a music teacher and critic. Organist in a number of London churches, including St. Luke's, Old Street (1844-1864), and St. Pancras (1864-1869), Smart was famous for his extemporizations and for his accompaniment of congregational singing. He became completely blind at the age of fifty-two, but his remarkable memory enabled him to continue playing the organ. Fascinated by organs as a youth, Smart designed organs for important places such as St. Andrew Hall in Glasgow and the Town Hall in Leeds. He composed an opera, oratorios, part-songs, some instrumental music, and many hymn tunes, as well as a large number of works for organ and choir. He edited the Choralebook (1858), the English Presbyterian Psalms and Hymns for Divine Worship (1867), and the Scottish Presbyterian Hymnal (1875). Timothy Dudley-Smith

b. 1926 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith, 1926- Scripture: 1 Peter 4:8 Author of "Not for Tongues of Heaven's Angels" in Worship and Rejoice Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church positions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973). Richard Runciman Terry

1865 - 1938 Person Name: Richard Runciman Terry (1865-1938) Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10 Composer of "HIGHWOOD" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Terry, Richard R., was born at Morpeth, Jan. 3, 1868, and was Tate Choral Scholar at King's College, Cambridge. In 1896 he became organist and music-master at Downside R. C. College and Abbey, Bath; and in 1901 organist and director of the choir at Westminster Cathedral (R. C.) London. He contributed to A. E. Tozer's Catholic Hymns, 1898, thirteen tunes and the words of two hymns:— 1. Christ, the Lord, is my true Shepherd. Ps. xxiii. 2. Peaceful eve, so still and holy. Christmas Carol. It is marked as D. C. B., i.e. for Downside Coll., Bath. The tune by Mr. Tozor was published in 1881 to a carol beginning with the same first line, but otherwise entirely different. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)

Stephen P. Starke

b. 1955 Person Name: Stephen P. Starke, b. 1955 Scripture: 1 Peter 4:12 Translator (sts. 4-5) of "Why should Cross and Trial Grieve me" in Lutheran Service Book Rev. Stephen P. Starke has always had a heart for hymns. At a young age, Starke played hymns out of The Lutheran Hymnal and read through the hymnal to pass the time before Sunday services. Pastor Starke graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a BA. While completing his MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attempted his first hymn text and was encouraged to write more. Since that time, he has written more than 175 hymns inspired by music and the Scriptures. He has been commissioned to write hymns for special occasions, including the 125th anniversary of Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as his daughter’s wedding. Because of his extensive work as a hymnwriter, Pastor Starke received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Concordia University, Irvine, California, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. It is through the medium of hymns that Pastor Starke desires to preserve and pass on the truths of the Gospel for generations to come.

Johann Georg Ebeling

1637 - 1676 Person Name: Johann G. Ebeling, 1637-76 Scripture: 1 Peter 4:12 Composer of "WARUM SOLLT ICH MICH DENN GRÄMEN" in Lutheran Service Book Johann George Ebeling Germany 1637-1676. Born at Luneburg, Germany, he studied theology at the University of Helmstedt. He was a composer, author, editor, and collector of music. In 1660 he became head of the Hamburg Collegium, and in 1662 cantor of St. Nicholas Church in Berlin. In 1667 he begam teaching music and Greek in Stettin. He wrote choruses, chorales, cantatas, instrumentals oratorios, requiems and music for over 100 lyrics of Paul Gerhardt. He also wrote about music history. 278 works. He died in Stettin. John Perry

1596 - 1662 Person Name: Henry Lawes, 1595-1662 Scripture: 1 Peter 4:10-11 Composer of "FARLEY CASTLE" in Lutheran Service Book Born: January 5, 1596, Dinton, Wiltshire, England. Died: October 21, 1662, London, England. Buried: In the cloisters of Westminster Abbey, London, England. Lawes, tutor to the daughters of the Earl of Bridgewater, is best known as a composer. He became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1626, and a member of the "King’s Musick" in 1631. He wrote over 400 vocal pieces, as well as anthems and instrumental compositions.
