Oh, happy is the man who hears

Author: Logan Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 301 hymnals Scripture: James 5:11 Lyrics: 1 Oh, happy is the man who hears Instruction's warning voice, And who celestial wisdom makes His early, only choice. 2 For she hath treasures greater far Than east or west unfold, And her rewards more precious are Than gems or stores of gold. 3 Her right hand offers to the just Immortal, happy days; Her left, imperishable wealth And heavenly crowns displays. 4 She guides the young with innocence, In pleasure's paths to tread; A crown of glory she bestows Upon the hoary head. 5 And as her holy labors rise, So her rewards increase; Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace. At the Name of Jesus

Author: Caroline Maria Noel (1817-1877) Meter: 11.11.11.11 Appears in 253 hymnals Scripture: James 5:7-11 First Line: At the Name of Jesus every knee shall bow Lyrics: 1 At the Name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now; 'tis the Father's pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word. 2 Humbled for a season to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious when from death he passed; 3 Name him, Christians, name him, with love strong as death, but with awe and wonder, and with bated breath; he is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. 5 In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true; crown him as your Saviour in temptation's hour; let his will enfold you in its light and power. 5 Christians, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with his Father's glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of Glory now. Topics: Praise of God; Reign of Christ; Name of Jesus; Ascension and Exaltation Used With Tune: KING'S WESTON

Lord, teach us how to pray aright

Author: James Montgomery (1771-1854) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 222 hymnals Scripture: James 5:13-20 Lyrics: 1 Lord, teach us how to pray aright with reverence and with fear; though dust and ashes in thy sight, we may, we must, draw near. 2 We perish if we cease from prayer: O grant us power to pray; and, when to meet thee we prepare, Lord, meet us by the way. 3 God of all grace, we bring to thee a broken, contrite heart; give what thine eye delights to see, truth in the inward part; 4 Faith in the only sacrifice that can for sin atone, to cast our hopes, to fix our eyes, on Christ, on Christ alone; 5 Patience to watch and wait and weep, though mercy long delay; courage our fainting souls to keep, and trust thee though thou slay. 6 Give these, and then thy will be done; thus, strengthened with all might, we, through thy Spirit and thy Son, shall pray, and pray aright.
