One of his first pas­tor­ates was in Teign­mouth, De­von­shire. In 1832, he moved to Bris­tol, where he found­ed the Scrip­tur­al Know­ledge In­sti­tu­tion two years lat­er, and be­came well known for run­ning or­phan­ages.
