Hail to the Lord's Anointed

Author: James Montgomery, 1771-1854 Hymnal: CPWI2010 #251 (2010) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Scripture: Psalm 72 Lyrics: 1 Hail to the Lord's Anointed, great David's greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, to take away transgression, and rule in equity. *2 He comes with succour speedy to those who suffer wrong; to help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong; to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, whose souls, condemned and dying, were precious in his sight. 3 He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth: before him on the mountains shall peace, the herald, go; and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow. 4 Kings shall bow down before him, and gold and incense bring; all nations shall adore him, his praise all people sing: to him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend; his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. 5 O'er every foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest; from age to age more glorious, all-blessing and all-blest: the tide of time shall never his covenant remove; his name shall stand for ever, his changeless name of Love. Jesus shall reign where'er the sun

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748; Edward Denny, 1796-1889 Hymnal: CPWI2010 #321 (2010) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 72 Lyrics: 1 Jesus shall reign where'er the sun does his successive journeys run; his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more. 2 People and realms of every tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song, and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name. 3 Blessings abound where'er he reigns; the prisoner leaps to lose his chains; the weary find eternal rest, and all the sons of want are blest. 4 Let every creature rise and bring peculiar honours to our King; angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud amen. New every morning is the love

Author: John Keble, 1792-1866 Hymnal: CPWI2010 #5 (2010) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 73:25 Lyrics: 1 New every morning is the love our wakening and uprising prove; through sleep and darkness safely brought, restored to life, and power, and thought. 2 New mercies, each returning day, hover around us while we pray; new perils past, new sins forgiven, new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven. 3 If on our daily course our mind be set to hallow all we find, new treasures still, of countless price, God will provide for sacrifice. 4 The trivial round, the common task, will furnish all we need to ask, room to deny ourselves, a road to bring us daily nearer God. 5 Only, O Lord, in thy dear love fit us for perfect rest above; and help us, this and every day, to live more nearly as we pray. The Lord will come and not be slow

Author: John Milton, 1608-1674 Hymnal: CPWI2010 #55 (2010) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 82:3 Lyrics: 1 The Lord will come and not be slow, his footsteps cannot err; before him righteousness shall go, his royal harbinger. 2 Truth from the earth, like to a flower, shall bud and blossom then; and justice, from her heavenly bower, look down on mortal men. 3 Rise, God, judge thou the earth in might, this wicked earth redress; for thou art he who shalt by right the nations all possess. 4 The nations all whom thou hast made shall come, and all shall frame to bow them low before thee, Lord, and glorify thy name. 5 For great thou art, and wonders great by thy strong hand are done: thou in thy everlasting seat remainest God alone. Jesus, where'er thy people meet

Author: William Cowper, 1731-1800 Hymnal: CPWI2010 #732 (2010) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 84 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, where'er thy people meet, there they behold thy mercy-seat; where'er they seek thee, thou art found, and every place is hallowed ground. 2 For thou, within no walls confined, inhabitest the humble mind; such ever bring thee when they come, and, going, take thee to their home. 3 Dear Shepherd of thy chosen few, thy former mercies here renew; here to our waiting hearts proclaim the sweetness of thy saving name. 4 Here may we prove the power of prayer to strengthen faith and sweeten care, to teach our faint desires to rise, and bring all heaven before our eyes. 5 Lord, we are few, but thou art near; nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear; O rend the heavens, come quickly down, and make a thousand hearts thine own. Lord of the worlds above

To thine abode my heart aspires, with warm desires to see my God. 2 O happy souls that pray where God appoints to hear! O happy men that pay their constant service there! They praise thee still; and happy they that love the way to Zion's hill. 3 They go from strength to strength through this dark vale of tears, till each arrives at length, till each in heaven appears: O glorious seat! When God our King shall thither bring our willing feet. Topics: Sacraments and Other Occasions Dedication Festival Languages: English Tune Title: CROFT'S 136TH

Pleasant are thy courts above

Author: Henry Francis Lyte, 1793-1847 Hymnal: CPWI2010 #740 (2010) Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Scripture: Psalm 84 Lyrics: 1 Pleasant are thy courts above in the land of light and love; pleasant are thy courts below in this land of sin and woe; Oh, my spirit longs and faints for the converse of thy saints, for the brightness of thy face, for thy fullness, God of grace. 2 Happy birds that sing and fly round thy altars, O most high; happier souls that find a rest in a heavenly Father's breast; like the wandering dove that found no repose on earth around, they can to their ark repair, and enjoy it ever there. 3 Happy souls, their praises flow even in this vale of woe; waters in the desert rise, manna feeds them from the skies, on they go from strength to strength, till they reach thy throne at length, at thy feet adoring fall, who hast led them safe through all. 4 Lord, be mine this prize to win, guide me through a world of sin, keep me by thy saving grace, give me at thy side a place; sun and shield alike thou art, guide and guard my erring heart; grace and glory flow from thee; shower, O shower them, Lord, on me. There's a wideness in God's mercy

Author: Frederick William Faber, 1814-1863 Hymnal: CPWI2010 #350 (2010) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Psalm 86:15 Lyrics: 1 There's a wideness in God's mercy like the wideness of the sea; there's a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty. There is welcome for the sinner, and more graces for the good; there is mercy with the Saviour; there is healing in his blood. 2 There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgement given. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head. 3 For the love of God is broader than the measure of our mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more faithful, we should take him at his word; and our life would be thanksgiving for the goodness of the Lord.
