As newborn stars were stirred to song

Author: Carl P. Daw Jr. (b. 1944) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Job 38:7 Lyrics: 1 As newborn stars were stirred to song when all things came to be, as Miriam and Moses sang when Israel was set free, so music bursts unbidden forth when God-filled hearts rejoice, to waken awe and gratitude and give mute faith a voice. 2 In psalms that raise the singer’s sense to universal truths, in prophet’s dark-toned oracle or hymn of three brave youths: the song of faith and praise endured through those God called to be a chosen people bearing light for all the world to see. 3 When God’s redeeming Word took flesh to make salvation sure, unheeding hearts attuned to strife refused love’s overture. Yet to the end the song went on: a supper’s parting hymn, a psalm intoned on dying lips when sun and hope grew dim. 4 But silence won no vict’ry there; a rest was all it scored before glad alleluias rose to greet the risen Lord. The church still keeps that song alive, for death has lost its sting, and with the gift of life renewed the heart will ever sing. Topics: Hymns and Spiritual Songs Praise Used With Tune: ALEXANDRA

God, Bless the Poet's Heart and Hand

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Job 38, 39 First Line: God bless the poet's heart and hand, creating songs of faith and praise Lyrics: God, bless the poet’s heart and hand, creating songs of faith and praise; Yet may each writer understand our words cannot contain your ways. God, bless the ones who boldly dare to let the scriptures be their guide; Yet may no one of us declare that you are always on our side. God, bless the ones who teach and learn, who seek the truth by which to live; Yet show us: Knowledge cannot earn the love that only you can give. God, bless the ones who daily lead your churches, cities, nations, too; Yet may these leaders humbly see their need to serve and follow you. In Christ we daily live and grow; your Spirit guides us by your grace. A mirrored image now we know; yet one day we’ll see face to face. Topics: Life in Christ; Worship Used With Tune: TALLIS' CANON
