Eternal Light! Eternal Light!

Author: Thomas Binney, 1798-1874 Hymnal: Common Praise #414a (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.8.6 Scripture: Exodus 33:20 Lyrics: 1 Eternal Light! Eternal Light! How pure that soul must be, when, placed within thy searching sight, it shrinks not, but with calm delight can live and look on thee. 2 The spirits that surround thy throne may bear the burning bliss; but surely that is theirs alone, since they have never, never known a fallen world like this, 3 O how shall I, whose native sphere is dark, whose mind is dim, before the Ineffable appear, and on my naked spirit bear the uncreated beam? 4 There is a way for man to rise to that sublime abode; an offering and a sacrifice, a Holy Spirit's energies, an Advocate with God: 5 These, these prepare us for the sight of holiness above: the sons of ignorance and night may dwell in the eternal light, through the eternal Love! Thee We Adore, O Hidden Saviour, Thee

Author: Thomas Aquinas (1225?-1274); James Russell Woodford (1820 - 1885) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #76 (1998) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Scripture: Exodus 33:12-23 Lyrics: 1 Thee we adore, O hidden Saviour, thee, who in thy sacrament dost deign to be; both flesh and spirit at thy presence fail, yet here thy presence we devoutly hail. 2 O blest memorial of our dying Lord, who living bread to us doth here afford, O may our souls forever feed on thee, and thou, O Christ, forever precious be. 3 Fountain of goodness, Jesus, Lord and God, cleanse us, unclean, with thy most cleansing blood; increase our faith and love, that we may know the hope and peace which from thy presence flow. 4 O Christ, whom now beneath a veil we see, may what we thirst for soon our portion be: to gaze on thee unveiled and see thy face, the vision of thy glory and thy grace. The Lord! how fearful is his name!

Hymnal: A New Selection of Hymns; designed for the use of conference meetings, private circles, and congregations, as a supplement to Dr. Watts' Psalms and Hymns #45 (1812) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Exodus 33:19 Lyrics: 1 The Lord! how fearful is his name! How wide is his command! nature, with all her moving frame, Rests on his mighty hand. 2 Immortal glory forms his throne, And light his awful robe; Whilst, with a smile, or with a frown, He manages the globe. 3 A word of his almighty breath Can swell or sink the seas; Build the vast empires of the earth, Or break them, as he please. 4 Adoring angels round him fall, In all their shining forms, His SOVEREIGN eye looks thro' them all, And pities mortal worms. 5 His bowels to our worthless race In sweet compassion move; He clothes his looks with softest grace, And takes his title, LOVE. 6 Now let the Lord for ever reign, And sway us as he will, Sick, or in health, in ease, or pain We are his fav'rites still. 7 No more shall peevish passion rise, The tongue no more complain; 'Tis SOVEREIGN LOVE that lends our joys, And love resumes again. God Is Here!

Author: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #1 (2003) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Exodus 33:14 First Line: God is here! As we your people Lyrics: 1 God is here! As we your people meet to offer praise and prayer, may we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share. Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts wait the coming of the Spirit into open minds and hearts. 2 Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; here are table, font, and pulpit; here the cross has central place. Here in honesty of preaching, here in silence, as in speech, here, in newness and renewal, God the Spirit comes to each. 3 Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd's flock and fold; here as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us as of old. Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore what it means in daily living to believe and to adore. 4 Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt, keep us faithful to the Gospel; help us work your purpose out. Here, in this day's dedication, all we have to give, receive; we, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe! Languages: English Tune Title: ABBOT'S LEIGH
