Cyril Taylor

1907 - 1991 Person Name: Cyril Vincent Taylor, 1807- Composer of "ABBOT'S LEIGH" in The Hymn Book of the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada Cyril V. Taylor (b. Wigan, Lancashire, England, 1907; d. Petersfield, England, 1992) was a chorister at Magdalen College School, Oxford, and studied at Christ Church, Oxford, and Westcott House, Cambridge. Ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1932, he served the church as both pastor and musician. His positions included being a producer in the religious broadcasting department of the BBC (19391953), chaplain of the Royal School of Church Music (1953-1958), vicar of Cerne Abbas in Dorsetshire (1958-1969), and precentor of Salisbury Cathedral (1969-1975). He contributed twenty hymn tunes to the BBC Hymn Book (1951), which he edited, and other tunes to the Methodist Hymns and Psalms (1983). He also edited 100 Hymns for Today (1969) and More Hymns for Today (1980). Writer of the booklet Hymns for Today Discussed (1984), Taylor was chairman of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland from 1975 to 1980. Bert Polman

Walter Farquharson

b. 1936 Person Name: Walter Henry Farquharson, 1936- Author of "God Who Gives To Life Its Goodness" in The Hymn Book of the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada Farquharson, Walter Henry. (Rosetown, Saskatchewan, May 30, 1936- ). United Church. University of Saskatchewan, B.A., 1957; B.D., 1961 (St. Andrew's College). His single pastorate (1961- ) has been a "tentmaker" ministry" at Saltcoats, Sask., which he combined with teaching English in the town's high school, and which he has from time to time shared with other clergy, notably Margaret Joyce Dickin. Charles Venn Pilcher

1879 - 1961 Person Name: Charles Venn Pilcher, 1879-1961 Composer of "HERMON" in The Book of Praise Pilcher, Charles Venn. (Oxford, June 4, 1879--July 4, 1961, Sydney, Australia). Anglican. Grandnephew of Charlotte Elliott. Hertford College, Oxford, B.A., 1902; M.A., 1905; B.D., 1909; D.D., 1921. Curacies at Birmingham, 1903-1905; St. James, Toronto, 1910-1916; taught theology at Auckland Castle, England, 1905-1906, and at Wycliffe College, Toronto, 1916-1936. Elected coadjutor bishop of Sydney, Australia, at the instance of a former Wycliffe colleague, Archbishop Mowll. He composed hymn tunes and other music, and long played bass clarinet in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Also, he translated and published much devotional material from Iceland, notably Iceland Christian Classics (1950). These side interests, like his hymn writing, merely served to heighten and deepen his effectiveness and influence as a teacher. --Hugh D. McKellar, DNAH Archives
