There Is a Land of Pure Delight

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,402 hymnals Lyrics: 1. There is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign; Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain. 2. There everlasting spring abides, And never withering flowers: Death, like a narrow sea, divides This heav’nly land from ours. 3. Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood Stand dressed in living green: So to the Jews old Canaan stood, While Jordan rolled between. 4. But timorous mortals start and shrink To cross this narrow sea; And linger, shivering on the brink, And fear to launch away. 5. O could we make our doubts remove, Those gloomy thoughts that rise, And see the Canaan that we love With unbeclouded eyes! 6. Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o’er, Not Jordan’s stream, nor death’s cold flood, Should fright us from the shore. I Take The Journey Of A Day

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I take the journey of a day, Thy sun, Lord, gives me light; The moon and stars, Thy voice obey, And watch me through the night. 2 For mercies every hour bestowed Unceasing thanks are due; Now, ’midst the dangers of the road, Lord, bring me safely through. 3 Upheld by Thine almighty arm, And guided by Thine eye, Storms cannot crush, nor lightnings harm, Sickness nor plague come nigh. 4 Thou art Thy people’s sun and shield, Their glory and defense; All elements allegiance yield To sovereign Providence. 5 But not in Providence alone The Godhead’s footsteps shine, In grace are mightier wonders shown, Of love and power divine. 6 As these thus far on pilgrimage, My lengthened course attend, So may they lead me stage by stage, To mine appointed end. 7 When all my journeyings here must cease, And life no more shall be; Lord, let me then depart in peace, From everything but Thee. Sweet Flowers Are Blooming In God's Sight

Author: Matilda B. Stevenson Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Sweet flowers are blooming in God’s sight Lyrics: 1 Sweet flowers are blooming in God’s sight, Created by His word, Beneath His heav’n of sunny light, By spring’s quick pulses stirred. 2 Through sky blue depths the larks do sing: Their music fills the air; What is it makes their voices ring With gladness everywhere? 3 It is the love of God, I know, His world with joy doth fill; His birds that sing, His flowers that blow, Each of them does His will. 4 If He is glad when small birds sing, And flowers drink the dew, Can I, His child, do anything To bring Him service too? 5 I am not wise, nor great, nor strong, But I His will may do; May love and serve Him all day long, Be innocent and true. 6 And if to birds and flowers His smile Of love and joy be giv’n, His child shall serve Him all the while, And find that love is Heav’n. When God Descends, A Streaming Fire

Author: Benjamin Beddome, 1717-1795 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals First Line: When God descends, a streaming fire Lyrics: 1 When God descends, a streaming fire Attends Him through the sky; Thick clouds compose His dark attire, And vivid lightnings fly. 2 Impervious wreaths of smoke surround, And hide His awful seat; Incessant thunders roar around, Or murmur at His feet. 3 ’Twas thus on Sinai’s lofty hill, Jehovah once appeared; The trumpet loud proclaimed His will, And trembling Israel heard. 4 They trembling heard, but straight forgot The terrors of the day; They scarcely left the awful spot, Before they went astray. 5 Their solemn vows they soon revoke, False and ungrateful prove; Forget the tempest, fire and smoke, Their maker’s wrath and love. 6 What Sinai’s terrors ne’er could do, That Sion’s God performs; ’Tis He creates our hearts anew, And strengthens feeble worms. 7 He gently leads our wandering souls In paths of righteousness; And all our passions He controls, By His all-powerful grace. 8 From Sinai we to Sion fly, The city of our God; Unawed and fearless we draw nigh, And make it our abode. The Wounds Which Jesus Once Endured

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 The wounds which Jesus once endured Were stigmas of His shame; But now they have for Him procured An everlasting name. 2 The nail-prints, and the lance’s scar The work of hellish spite, His bright triumphal trophies are, And badges of His might. 3 "Behold these hands; at My command Touch them," the Savior cried; "Reach hither, Thomas, reach thy hand, And thrust it in My side." 3 Thomas obeyed the Savior’s word, "My Lord and God," he said; He owned his master and his Lord, And to his God he prayed. 4 O mighty Conqueror of the grave! To Thee be endless praise, For all the proofs Thy mercy gave That Thou Thyself didst raise. 5 For with Thee Lord, we upward tend, With Thee Thy members rise; In Thine ascension we ascend To mansions in the skies. 6 Praise for the proofs that we receive Through Thomas, Lord, from Thee; He doubted that we might believe, And never doubtful be. 7 Praise also for the lesson taught To our fond human love, When Thou didst raise a woman’s thought From earth to Heav’n above. 8 Through Thomas we Thy manhood know; And, through the Magdalene, We learn to touch, while here below, Thy deity unseen. God, My Supporter and My Hope

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 223 hymnals Lyrics: 1. God, my supporter and my hope, My help for ever near, Thine arm of mercy held me up, When sinking in despair. 2. Thy counsels, Lord, shall guide my feet Through this dark wilderness; Thine hand conduct me near Thy seat, To dwell before Thy face. 3. Were I in Heav’n without my God, ’Twould be no joy to me; And whilst this earth is my abode, I long for none but Thee. 4. What if the springs of life were broke, And flesh and heart should faint? God is my soul’s eternal rock, The strength of every saint. 5. Behold, the sinners that remove Far from Thy presence die; Not all the idol gods they love Can save them when they cry. 6. But to draw near to Thee, my God, Shall be my sweet employ; My tongue shall sound Thy works abroad, And tell the world my joy. Used With Tune: ASCRIPTION Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719

The Evils That Beset Our Path

Author: John Newton Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 42 hymnals Lyrics: 1 The evils that beset our path Who can prevent or cure? We stand upon the brink of death When most we seem secure. 2 If we today sweet peace possess, It soon may be withdrawn; Some change may plunge us in distress, Before tomorrow’s dawn. 3 Disease and pain invade our health And find an easy prey; And oft, when least expected, wealth Takes wings and flies away. 4 A fever or a blow can shake Our wisdom’s boasted rule; And of the brightest genius make A madman or a fool. 5 The gourds, from which we look for fruit, Produce us only pain; A worm unseen attacks the root, And all our hopes are vain. 6 I pity those who seek no more Than such a world can give; Wretched they are, and blind, and poor, And dying while they live. 7 Since sin has filled the earth with woe, And creatures fade and die; Lord wean our hearts from things below, And fix our hopes on high.
