Love Divine

Author: Charles Wesley Appears in 1,864 hymnals First Line: Love divine, all loves excelling Lyrics: 1 Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heav'n, to earth come down; Fix in us Thy humble dwelling; All Thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure, unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation; Enter ev'ry trembling heart. 2 Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit Into ev'ry troubled breast! Let us all in Thee inherit, Let us find that second rest. Take away our bent to sinning, Alpha and Omega be; End of faith, as its beginning, Set our hearts at liberty. 3 Come, almighty to deliver, Let us all Thy life receive; Suddenly return, and never, Nevermore Thy temples leave: Thee we would be always blessing, Serve Thee as Thy hosts above, Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing, Glory in Thy perfect love. 4 Finish then Thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be; Let us see Thy great salvation, Perfectly restored in Thee: Changed from glory into glory, Till in heav'n we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise. Topics: Adoration; Christ; Holy Spirit Used With Tune: [Love divine, all loves excelling]

The Old Rugged Cross

Author: Rev. G. B. Appears in 347 hymnals First Line: On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross Refrain First Line: So I'll cherish the old rugged cross Lyrics: 1 On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suff'ring and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain. Chorus: So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it some day for a crown. 2 Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me, For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above, To bear it to dark Calvary. [Chorus] 3 In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see; For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me. [Chorus] 4 To that old rugged cross I will ever be true, Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He'll call me some day to my home far away, Where His glory forever I'll share. [Chorus] Topics: Atonement; Cross; Solos Used With Tune: [On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross]

Beneath the Cross of Jesus

Author: Elizabeth C. Clephane Hymnal: TH41952 #1 (1960) Lyrics: 1 Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, The shadow of a mighty Rock Within a weary land; A home within the wilderness, A rest upon the way, From the burning of the noonday heat, And the burden of the day. 2 Upon that cross of Jesus Mine eyes at times can see The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me; And from my smitten heart with tears These wonders I confess, - The wonders of His glorious love, And my own worthlessness. 3 I take, O cross, thy shadow For my abiding-place; I ask no other sunshine than The sunshine of His face; Content to let the world go by, To know no gain nor loss, My sinful self my only shame, My glory all the cross. Topics: Consecration; Cross; Security Tune Title: [Beneath the cross of Jesus]

The Church's One Foundation

Author: Samuel J. Stone Hymnal: TH41952 #2 (1960) First Line: The Churh's one foundation Lyrics: 1 The Church's one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the word: From Heav'n He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died. 2 Elect from ev'ry nation, Yet one o'er all the earth, Her charter of salvation One Lord, one faith, one birth; One Holy Name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With ev'ry grace endued. 3 'Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war, She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore; Till, with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest, And the great church victorious Shall be the church at rest. 4 Yet she on earth hath union With God the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, Like them, the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with Thee. Amen. Topics: Church; Opening Languages: English Tune Title: [The Church's one foundation]
