105. The Beatitudes

1 Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Oh, make me poor in spirit, Lord,
Bless me, according to thy word.

2 Blessed are they that mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
Oh, make me sorrowful for sin,
Thy promised comfort let me win.

3 Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.
Let me be meek and lowly, Lord,
And gain from thee the blest reward.

4 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness,
for they shall be filled.
Lord, make me hungry for thy love,
And fill my soul from heav'n above.

5 Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.
Make me both merciful and kind,
That I thy mercy, Lord, may find.

6 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see God.
Lord, make me pure, from evil free,
That I thy blessed face may see.

7 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called the children of God.
Let me make peace, call me thy child,
Oh, make me gentle, patient, mild.

8 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Let me rejoice the cross to bear,
Let me thy heavenly kingdom share.

Let me, O Lord, be blest indeed,
Thy faithful promises I plead.
