B. F. White

1800 - 1879 Meter: 10.11.10.11 with refrain Composer of "SEND A BLESSING" Benjamin F. White (b. Spartanburg, SC, 1800; d. Atlanta, GA, 1879), was coeditor of The Sacred Harp (1844). He came from a family of fourteen children and was largely self-taught. Eventually White became a popular singing-school teacher and editor of the weekly Harris County newspaper. Bert Polman

Thoro Harris

Buried: International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Eureka Springs, Arkansas. After attending college in Battle Creek, Michigan, Harris produced his first hymnal in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1902. He then moved to Chicago, Illinois at the invitation of Peter Bilhorn, and in 1932, to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He composed and compiled a number of works, and was well known locally as he walked around with a canvas bag full of handbooks for sale. His works include: Light and Life Songs, with William Olmstead & William Kirkpatrick (Chicago, Illinois: S. K. J. Chesbro, 1904) Little Branches, with George J. Meyer & Howard E. Herbert Buffum

1879 - 1939 Person Name: H. B. Meter: 10.11.10.11 with refrain Author of "I'm Going Through" in Timeless Truths Herbert Buffum was born in La Fayette, Illinois 13 November 1879. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He started preaching at seventeen years of age. He did city mission work up and down the Pacific Coast and later in small towns in Kansas. He began publishing hymns at the age of eighteen. F. E. Belden

1858 - 1945 Meter: 10.11.10.11 with refrain Author of "Sweet Promise Is Given" in The Church Hymnal Belden was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1858. He began writing music in his late teenage years after moving to California with his family. For health reasons he later moved to Colorado. He returned to Battle Creek with his wife in the early 1880s, and there he became involved in Adventist Church publishing. F. E. Belden wrote many hymn tunes, gospel songs, and related texts in the early years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Belden was able to rapidly write both music and poetry together which enabled him to write a song to fit a sermon while it was still being delivered. He also wrote songs for evangelist Billy Sunday. Though Belden’s later years were marred by misunderstandings with the church leadership over his royalties, he did donate his papers and manuscripts to the church’s seminary at his death. William Backus Olmstead

1862 - 1941 Person Name: William B. Olmstead Meter: 10.11.10.11 with refrain Arranger of "[Lord, I have started to walk in the light]" in Timeless Truths William Backus Olmstead USA 1862-1941. He was born in Michigan. Musically inclined, he wrote a score: “A little while, O hands” for the piano. He wrote a handbook for Sunday school workers and a biography of the Rev Charles H Sage (his pioneering church work in MI and other states and formation of the Canadian church conference). He published three song books: “Light & life songs” (1904), “Voices of praise” (1909), and “Light & life songs #2” (1914). He also served on the commission (one of three editors) that produced the Free Methodist Hymnal (1910), published in Winona Lake, IN. He was living in Chicago in 1914. In 1921 he became Mission Secretary for the China Inland Mission of the Methodist Church. In 1923-24 he and his wife, Minnie, were engaged on a world-wide trip on behalf of the church, visiting hospitals, schools, leper colonies, and congregations across Japan, China, India, and southern Africa.
