Mrs. C. H. Morris

1862 - 1929 Person Name: Lelia N. Morris Meter: 9.10.9.10 Author of "Nearer, Still Nearer" in Hymns for the Living Church Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including "Sweeter as the years go by." Mary Louise VanDyke

Vicente P. Mendoza

1875 - 1955 Person Name: Vincente Mendoza Meter: 9.10.9.10 Translator of "Cerca, más cerca" in Mil Voces para Celebrar Vicente Mendoza Born: December 24, 1875, Guadalajara, Mexico. Died: 1955, Mexico City, Mexico. Mendoza studied initially under Don Aurelio Ortega. At age of 11 he went to work in a Protestant print shop in Mexico City and helped produce El Evangelista Mexicano (The Mexican Evangelist) for the Methodist Church of the South; he rose to become its director for 17 years. Looking to improve himself, Mendoza entered a night school for workers, but later feeling the call to preach the Gospel, he entered the Presbyterian Seminary in Mexico City. When the seminary closed temporarily, Mendoza entered the Methodist Institute of Puebla, where he finished the course in theology. In 1898 he became a member of the Annual Conference of the Mexican Methodist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he belonged to the Southern Methodist Conference of California. Ralph Manuel

b. 1951 Meter: 9.10.9.10 Composer of "DEDICAÇÃO" in Hinário para o Culto Cristão Rev. Ralph Manuel, Minister of Music Fresh from the tropical climes of Brazil, Ralph Manuel took on the mantle as HBC's Minister of Music in February 2004. Ralph and his family have quickly become an important part of the church family, reaching out to members and visitors with a message in music. A native of Oklahoma City, Ralph has also lived in Fort Worth, Texas; Walnut Ridge, Arkansas and Recife, Brazil. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Oklahoma City University and a Masters of Church Music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. For 24 years, Ralph and his wife Donna served as missionaries to Brazil. Ralph taught at North Brazil Baptist Theological Seminary and worked at the Imperial Baptist Church of Recife. In this capacity, he assisted churches in their music ministry and led musical groups that went into the community to share the message of the gospel. Ralph is an accomplished pianist and a published composer and arranger of sacred choral, vocal and keyboard music. His compositions are used in churches around the world, including the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. He was awarded the Arthur Lakschevitz prize from the Association of Baptist Musicians of Brazil for outstanding contribution to church music among Brazilian Baptists. In 2002, he was chosen to write the commissioned anthem for the Baptist Church Music Conference in Memphis. Ralph and Donna have two teenagers-James and Melissa. Ralph's hobbies include playing the piano and collecting old hymnals. His favorite hymns are "Blessed Assurance" because of its exuberant nature and "Redeemed" because of its solid affirmation of a joyful faith. His favorite Bible passage is Psalm 103, particularly the middle verses which express the Lord's continuing love for us despite our unworthiness. --www.heritagebaptistonline
