Person Name: Anon. Scripture: 2 Samuel 1:26 Author of "Peacefully Lay Him Down to Rest" in The Christian Hymnary. Bks. 1-4 In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

1866 - 1960 Person Name: T. O. Chisholm Scripture: 2 Samuel 1:26 Author of "His Love Is Wonderful" in The Baptist Standard Hymnal Thomas O. Chisholm was born in Franklin, Kentucky in 1866. His boyhood was spent on a farm and in teaching district schools. He spent five years as editor of the local paper at Franklin. He was converted to Christianity at the age of 26 and soon after was business manager and office editor of the "Pentecostal Herald" of Louisville, Ky. In 1903 he entered the ministry of the M. E. Church South. His aim in writing was to incorporate as much as Scripture as possible and to avoid flippant or sentimental themes.

1873 - 1944 Person Name: Samuel W. Beazley, 1873- Scripture: 2 Samuel 1:26 Composer of "CHISHOLM" in The Baptist Standard Hymnal Samuel W. Beazley was born in Sparta, Virginia in 1873. He was a music scholar and taught music at Shenandoah College for five years. He composed over 4,000 gospel songs during his lifetime. Samuel W. Beazley maintained a successful publishing business in Chicago, Illinois. He died in Chicago on September 16, 1944. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1992.

1746 - 1800 Scripture: 2 Samuel 1 Composer of "[The beauty of Israel is slain]" in The Psalm-singer's amusement William Billings (b. 1746; d. 1800) was an American choral composer, thought by some to be the father of American choral music. His father died when William was 14, and he was forced to drop all formal education and take up tanning to get by. With no formal musical training he began to compose, and his songs were well-loved and traveled quickly. However, due to unsubstantial copyright laws, Billings received hardly a penny from the publication of his music. After a period of fame and prosperity, his music was forgotten, and his last decade was one of decline. Married with six children, he died in poverty, though his music would be resurrected after his death and sung to this day.
