On Jordan's Bank the Baptist's Cry

Author: Charles Coffin Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 230 hymnals Scripture: Luke 3:3-4 Lyrics: 1 On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry announces that the Lord is nigh. Awake and harken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings! 2 Then cleansed be every life from sin: make straight the way for God within, and let us all our hearts prepare for Christ to come and enter there. 3 We hail you as our Savior, Lord, our refuge and our great reward. Without your grace we waste away like flowers that wither and decay. 4 Stretch forth your hand, our health restore, and make us rise to fall no more. O let your face upon us shine and fill the world with love divine. 5 All praise to you, eternal Son, whose advent has our freedom won, whom with the Father we adore, and Holy Spirit, evermore. When Jesus Came to Jordan

Author: Fred Pratt Green, b. 1903 Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 21 hymnals Scripture: Luke 3:15-22 Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John, he did not come for pardon. but as the Sinless One. He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins, to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins. 2 He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss, for us and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the Dove descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make; this very day invade us, and ev'ry bondage break. Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most: to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost. Topics: Baptism of Our Lord, The; Epiphany Used With Tune: KING'S LYNN

Where is the soul-refreshing view of Jesus and his word? 3 What peaceful hours I once enjoyed! How sweet their memory still! But they have left an aching void the world can never fill. 4 Return, O Holy Dove! return, sweet messenger of rest! I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast. 5 The dearest idol I have known, whate'er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne, and worship only thee. 6 So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. Stoop to my weakness, mighty as you are, and make me love you as I ought to love. 2 I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel visitant, no opening skies, but take the dimness of my soul away. 3 Did you not bid us love you, God and King, love you with all our heart and strength and mind? I see your cross--there teach my heart to cling. O let me seek you and O let me find! 4 Teach me to feel that you are always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; teach me the patience of unanswered prayer. 5 Teach me to love you as your angels love, one holy passion filling all my frame: the baptism of the heaven-descended Dove, my heart an altar, and your love the flame. When John Baptized by Jordan's River

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, 1926- Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: Luke 3:21-22 Lyrics: 1 When John baptized by Jordan's river in faith and hope the people came, that John and Jordan might deliver their troubled souls from sin and shame. They came to seek a new beginning, the human spirit's ageless quest, repentance and an end of sinning, renouncing every wrong confessed. 2 There as the Lord, baptized and praying, rose from the stream the sinless One, a voice was heard from heaven saying, "This is my own beloved Son." There as the Father's word was spoken, not in the power of wind and flame, but of his love and peace the token, seen as a dove, the Spirit came. 3 O Son of Man, our nature sharing, in whose obedience all are blest, Saviour, our sins and sorrows bearing, hear us and grant us this request: daily to grow, by grace defended, filled with the Spirit from above; in Christ baptized, beloved, befriended, children of God in peace and love. Wild and Lone the Prophet's Voice

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Luke 3:1-22 Lyrics: 1 Wild and lone the prophet's voice echoes through the desert still, calling us to make a choice, bidding us to do God's will: "Turn from sin and be baptized; cleanse your heart and mind and soul. Quitting all the sin you prized, yield your life to God's control. 2 "Bear the fruit repentance sows: lives of justice, truth, and love. Trust no other claim than those; set your heart on things above. Soon the Lord will come in power, burning clean the threshing floor: then will flames the chaff devour; wheat alone shall fill God's store." 3 With such preaching stark and bold John proclaimed salvation near, and his timeless warnings hold words of hope to all who hear. Mark how the Lamb of God, self-offering

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. (b. 1944) Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Luke 3:21-22 Lyrics: 1 Mark how the Lamb of God, self-offering, our human sinfulness takes on there in the waters of the Jordan, as Jesus is baptized by John. Hear how the voice from heaven is saying, 'Lo, this is my belovèd Son.' See how in dovelike form the Spirit descends on God's Anointed One. 2 From this assurance of God's favour Christ goes into the wilderness, there to endure a time of testing, preparing him to teach and bless. So we, by water and the Spirit baptized into Christ's ministry, are often led to paths of service through mazes of adversity. 3 Grant us, O God, the strength and courage to live the faith our lips declare; bless us in our baptismal calling; Christ's royal priesthood help us share. Turn us from every false allegiance, that we may trust in Christ alone: make of us now a chosen people transformed by love to be your own. Sing of God Made Manifest

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr., 1944- Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Luke 3:21-22 Lyrics: 1 Sing of God made manifest in a child robust and blest, to whose home in Bethlehem where a star had guided them, Magi came and gifts unbound, signs mysterious and profound: myrrh and frankincense and gold grave and God and King foretold. 2 Sing of God made manifest when at Jordan John confessed, "I should be baptized by you, but your bidding I will do." Then from heaven a double sign-- dove-like Spirit, voice divine-- hailed the true Anointed One: "This is my beloved Son." 3 Sing of God made manifest when Christ came as wedding guest and at Cana gave a sign, turning water into wine; further still was love revealed as he taught, forgave, and healed, bringing light and life to all who would listen to God's call. 4 Sing of God made manifest on the cloud capped mountain's crest, where the law and prophets waned so that Christ alone remained: glimpse of glory, pledge of grace, given as Jesus set his face towards the waiting cross and grave, sign of hope that God would save. I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship

Author: William Young Fullerton, 1857-1932 Meter: 11.10.11.10 D Appears in 33 hymnals Scripture: Luke 3:6 Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship, should set his love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear and lifts the burden from the heavy laden; for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with love and joy is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer, 'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Arise, O Christian People

Author: Valentin Thilo, 1607-62; Arthur T. Russell, 1806-74 Meter: 7.6.7.6.6.7.7.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Luke 3:4-5 First Line: Arise, O Christian people! Lyrics: 1 Arise, O Christian people! Prepare yourselves today; Prepare to greet the Savior, Who takes you sins away. To us by grace alone The truth and light were given; The promised Lord from heaven To all the world is shown. 2 Prepare the way before Him; Prepare for Him the best. Cast out what would offend Him, This great, this heav'nly guest. Make straight, make plain the way: The lowly valleys raising, The heights of pride abasing, His path, all even lay. 3 The humble heart and lowly God raises up on high; Beneath His feet in terror The haughty soul shall lie. The heart sincere and right, That heeds God's invitation And makes true preparation-- It is the Lord's delight. 4 Prepare my heart, Lord Jesus; Turn not from me aside, And help me to receive You This blessed Advent-tide. From stall and manger low Come now to dwell within me; I'll sing Your praises gladly And forth Your glory show. Used With Tune: AUS MEINES HERZENS GRUNDE
