He is our God; Though dark our road, He holds us that we shall not fall; Wherefore to him we leave it all. 2 Whate'er our God ordains is right; He never will deceive us. He leads us by the proper path; We know he will not leave us, And take, content, What he has sent; His hand can turn our griefs away, And patiently we wait his day. 3 Whate'er our God ordains is right; Here shall our stand be taken; Though sorrow, need, or death be ours, Yet we are not forsaken; Our Father's care Is round us there; He holds us that we shall not fall, And so to him we leave it all. Your hand, in sight of all my foes, Does still my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows, Your oil anoints my head. 3 The sure provisions of my God Attend me all my days; O may your house be my abode, And all my work be praise. Samuel Rodigast

1649 - 1708 Topics: Acts of the Church Witness to the Resurrection—Funeral Author of "Whate'er Our God Ordains Is Right" in The Worshipbook Samuel Rodigast, son of Johann Rodigast, pastor at Groben near Jena, was born at Groben Oct. 19, 1649. He entered the University of Jena in 1668 (M.A. 1671), and was in 1676 appointed adjunct of the philosophical faculty. In 1680 he became conrector of the Greyfriars Gymnasium at Berlin. While in this position he refused the offers of a professorship at Jena and the Rectorships of the Schools at Stade and Stralsund. Finally, in 1698, he became rector of the Greyfriars Gymnasium, and held this post till his death. His tombstone in the Koster-Kirche in Berlin says he died "die xxix. Mart. a. MDCCVII . . . aetatis anno lix." ...Two hymns have been ascribed to him, on of which has passed into English, viz.:--"Whatever God ordains is right." --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Conrad Kocher

1786 - 1872 Topics: Acts of the Church The Marriage Service Composer of "DIX" in The Worshipbook Trained as a teacher, Conrad Kocher (b. Ditzingen, Wurttemberg, Germany, 1786; d. Stuttgart, Germany, 1872) moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, to work as a tutor at the age of seventeen. But his love for the music of Haydn and Mozart impelled him to a career in music. He moved back to Germany in 1811, settled in Stuttgart, and remained there for most of his life. The prestigious Cotta music firm published some of his early compositions and sent him to study music in Italy, where he came under the influence of Palestrina's music. In 1821 Kocher founded the School for Sacred Song in Stuttgart, which popularized four-part singing in the churches of that region. He was organist and choir director at the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart from 1827 to 1865. Kocher wrote a treatise on church music, Die Tonkunst in der Kirche (1823), collected a large number of chorales in Zions Harfe (1855), and composed an oratorio, two operas, and some sonatas. William H. Monk created the current form of DIX by revising and shortening Conrad Kocher's chorale melody for “Treuer Heiland, wir sind hier,” found in Kocher's Stimmen aus dem Reiche Gottes (1838).
