Isaiah the Prophet Has Written of Old

Author: Joy F. Patterson Meter: 11.8.11.8 D Appears in 14 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 55:10-13 Lyrics: 1 Isaiah the prophet has written of old how God’s new creation shall come. Instead of the thorn tree, the fir tree shall grow; the wolf shall lie down with the lamb. The mountains and hills shall burst forth into song, the peoples be led forth in peace, for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 Yet nations still prey on the meek of the world, and conflict turns parent from child. Your people despoil all the sweetness of earth; the briar and the thorn tree grow wild. God, bring to fruition your will for the earth, that no one shall hurt or destroy, that wisdom and justice shall reign in the land and your people shall go forth in joy. Topics: God's Covenant with Israel; Justice; World Peace Used With Tune: SAMANTHRA

In vain we lavish out our lives

Appears in 58 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 55:1-2 Lyrics: 1 In vain we lavish out our Lives to gather empty Wind; The choicest Blessings Earth can yield will starve a hungry Mind. 2 Come, and the Lord shall feed our Souls with more substantial Meat, With such as Saints in Glory love, with such as Angels eat. 3 Our God will every Want supply, and fill our Hearts with Peace; He gives by Cov'nant and by oath The Riches of his Grace. 4 Come, and He'll cleanse our spotted Souls, and wash away our Stains In the dear Fountain that his Son pour'd from his dying Veins. 5 Our Guilt shall vanish all away, tho' black as Hell before; Our Sins shall sink beneath the Sea, and shall be found no more. 6 And lest Pollution should o'er-spread our inward Pow'rs again, His Spirit shall bedew our Souls, like purifying Rain. 7 Our Heart, that flinty stubborn Thing, that Terrors cannot move, That fears no Threatnings of his Wrath, shall be dissolv'd by Love. 8 Or He can take the Flint away that would not be refin'd. And from the Treasures of his Grace bestow a softer Mind. 9 There shall his sacred Spirit dwell, and deep engrave his Law, And ev'ry Motion of our Souls to swift Obedience draw. 10 Thus will He pour Salvation down, and we shall render Praise; We the dear People of his Love, and He our God of Grace.

For you in healing streams it rolls: Money ye need not bring, nor price, Ye lab'ring, burthen'd, thirsting souls. 4 Ye nothing in exchange can give; Leave all you have, and are behind: Frankly the gift of God receive; Pardon and peace in Jesus find. He fills your needs to fullest measure With what discerning love has sent; Doubt not our inmost wants are known To him who chose us for his own. 3 Sing, pray, and keep his ways unswerving; Offer your service faithfully, And trust his word; though undeserving, You'll find his promise true to be. God never will forsake in need The soul that trusts in him indeed. --- 1 Si dejas tú que Dios te guíe, confiando solamente en él, en tus angustias y conflictos tendrás su ayuda grande y fiel. I Sought the Lord

Meter: 10.10.10.6 Appears in 89 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 55:6-9 First Line: I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew Lyrics: 1 I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew he moved my soul to seek him, seeking me. It was not I that found, O Savior true, no, I was found of thee. 2 Thou didst reach forth thy hand and mine enfold, I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea. ‘Twas not so much that I on thee took hold as thou, dear Lord, on me. 3 I find, I walk, I love, but, oh, the whole of love is but my answer, Lord, to thee! For thou wert long beforehand with my soul, always thou lovedst me.
