The Day You Gave Us

Author: John Ellerton Meter: 9.8.9.8 Appears in 281 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 113:1-5 First Line: The day you gave us, God, is ended Lyrics: 1 The day you gave us, God, is ended; the darkness falls at your request. To you our morning hymns ascended; your praise shall sanctify our rest. 2 We thank you that your church, unsleeping while earth rolls onward into light, through all the world its watch is keeping, and never rests by day or night. 3 As over continent and island each dawn leads on another day, the voice of prayer is never silent, nor do the praises die away. 4 So be it, God, your throne shall never, like earth’s proud empires, pass away. Your reign endures and grows forever, until there dawns your glorious day. Topics: Church; Praying; Reign of Christ; Worship Used With Tune: ST. CLEMENT Text Sources: Church Hymns, 1871, alt.

The Majesty and Condescension of God

Appears in 45 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 113 First Line: Ye that delight to serve the Lord Lyrics: 1 Ye that delight to serve the Lord, The honors of his name record – His sacred name forever bless: Where'er the circling sun displays His rising beams of setting rays, Let lands and seas his power confess. 2 Not time, nor nature's narrow rounds, Can give his vast dominion bounds, The heav'ns are far below his height; Let no created greatness dare With our eternal God compare, Arm'd with his uncreated might. 3 He bows his glorious head to view What the bright hosts of angels do, And bends his care to mortal things; His sov'reign hand exalts the poor, He takes the needy from the door, And seats them on the thrones of kings. 4 When childless families despair, He sends the blessings of an heir, To rescue their expiring name; The mother with a thankful voice, Proclaims his praises and her joys; Let ev'ry age advance his praise.

This is my Father’s world

Author: Maltbie Davenport Babcock, 1858-10-1; Mary Babcock Crawford, 1909- Appears in 315 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 113 Lyrics: 1 This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears all nature sings, and 'round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world; I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought. 2 This is my Father’s world: the birds their carols raise; the morning light, the lily white declare their Maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world: he shines in all that’s fair; in the rustling grass I hear him pass, he speaks to me ev'rywhere. 3 This is my Father’s world: O let us not forget that though the wrong is great and strong God is our Father yet. He trusts us with his world, to keep it clean and fair, the earth and trees, all skies and seas, all creatures ev'rywhere. God reigns; Let earth be glad! With joy that errand we review, On which thy mercy came. 2 While all thy own angelic bands Stood waiting on the wing, Charm'd with the honour to obey Their great eternal King. 3 For us mean, wretched, sinful men, Thou laid'st that glory by; First in our mortal flesh to serve, Then in that flesh to die. 4 Bought with thy service and thy blood, We doubly, Lord, are thine; To thee our lives we would devote, To thee our death resign. The Feast of Easter was enjoin'd

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 113 Lyrics: 1 The Feast of Easter was enjoin'd To keep our Saviour Christ in mind; He was our great Passover slain, Who once was dead but lives again. 2 That Paschal Lamb the Jews did eat, Pre-figur'd Christ our Lord complete! The whole of what it typified, Was all complete when Jesus died. 3 We also have a Paschal Lamb, Since Christ, our great Passover came; He died to be our sacrifice, And rose that we should also rise. 4 Let us agree with one accord, To keep this feast unto the Lord! But not in malice or deceit For such the Lord will ever hate. 5 To purge the heart from base desire! The keeping of this feast requires-- To love the Lord our living head, Is feasting on unleaven'd bread. Topics: The Feast of Easter
