Angel-Voices, Ever Singing

Author: Francis Pott (1832-1909) Meter: 8.5.8.5.8.4.3 Appears in 379 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 84 Lyrics: 1 Angel-voices, ever singing, round thy throne of light, angel-harps, forever ringing, rest not day nor night; thousands only live to bless thee and confess thee, Lord of might! 2 Yea, we know that thou rejoicest o'er each work of thine; thou didst ears and hands and voices for thy praise design; artist's craft and music's measure for thy pleasure all combine. 3 In thy house, great God, we offer of thine own to thee; and for thine acceptance proffer, in humility, hearts and minds and hands and voices in our choicest psalmody. 4 Honour, glory, might, and merit thine shall ever be, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, blessed Trinity! Of the best that thou hast given, earth and heaven render thee. Topics: Adoration; Angels; Arts and Music; Offertory; Praise of God Used With Tune: ANGEL VOICES

O Lord of Hosts, to Thee I Cry

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 84 Lyrics: 1. O Lord of hosts, to Thee I cry, Our fathers’ God, to Thee; Let my petition reach Thine ear, My prayer accepted be. O God our shield, look Thou on us, Reveal Thyself in grace, And let Thine own anointed one Behold Thee face to face. 2. A single day within Thy courts, Where I Thy beauty see, Is better than a thousand days, My God, apart from Thee. A lowly station in Thy house Were dearer to my heart Than in the tents of wickedness To claim the chiefest part. 3. A sun and shield is God, the Lord, To lighten and defend; The Lord to such as look to Him Will grace and glory send. To those that walk in righteousness No good will He deny. O Lord of hosts, how blest are they Who on Thy grace rely! Used With Tune: AUDITE AUDIENTES ME Text Sources: The Psalter (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: The United Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1912), number 226

How shall I sing that majesty

Author: John Mason (1646-1694) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 40 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 84:11 Lyrics: 1 How shall I sing that Majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I? 2 Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears; but they behold thy face. They sing because thou art their Sun: Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun, there alleluias be. 3 How great a being Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep. Thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere. Psalm 84

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 157 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 84:1-4 First Line: My soul, how lovely is the place Lyrics: My soul, how lovely is the place To which thy God resorts! 'Tis heav'n to see his smiling face, Though in his earthly courts. There the great Monarch of the skies His saving power displays, And light breaks in upon our eyes With kind and quick'ning rays. With his rich gifts the heav'nly Dove Descends and fills the place, While Christ reveals his wondrous love, And sheds abroad his grace. There, mighty God, thy words declare The secrets of thy will; And still we seek thy mercy there, And sing thy praises still. My heart and flesh cry out for thee, While far from thine abode; When shall I tread thy courts, and see My Savior and my God? The sparrow builds herself a nest, And suffers no remove; O make me, like the sparrows, blest, To dwell but where I love. To sit one day beneath thine eye, And hear thy gracious voice, Exceeds a whole eternity Employed in carnal joys. Lord, at thy threshold I would wait While Jesus is within, Rather than fill a throne of state, Or live in tents of sin. Could I command the spacious land, And the more boundless sea, For one blest hour at thy right hand I'd give them both away.
