Few, few and evil are thy days

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Job 14:1-3 Lyrics: Few, few and evil are thy days, Man, of a woman born; Peril and trouble haunt thy ways; Forth, like a flower at morn, The tender infant springs to light, Youth blossoms to the breeze, Age, withering age, is cropt ere night; Man like a shadow flees. 215 And dost thou look on such an one? Will God to judgment call A worm, for what a worm hath done Against the Lord of all? As fail the waters from the deep, As summer-brooks run dry, Man lieth down in dreamless sleep, His life is vanity. Man lieth down, no more to wake, Till yonder arching sphere Shall, with a roll of thunder, break, And nature disappear. O hide me, till Thy wrath be past, Thou who canst slay or save! Hide me, where hope may anchor fast, In my Redeemer's grave. Topics: Life and death and judgment

Few are the Days

Author: Charles P. Jones Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Job 14 First Line: Few are the days of man on earth Lyrics: 1 Few are the days of man on earth, Whate'er his lot, where'er his birth; Swift as a post they pass away, Nor have we pow'r to make them stay. 2 Yet while we daily pilgrims go, Great are our troubles here below, And often, while we have our breath, We long for rest, the rest of death. 3 Great God, the God of earth and sky, 'Tis Thou canst bless us from on high; 'Tis Thou canst make the burden light, And make our dying moments bright. 4 Then blessed Christ we look to Thee From ev'ry ill to set us free; Dwell Thou within each troubled heart, And strength divine to all impart. Farewell! (A Funeral Dirge)

Author: Charles P. Jones Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Job 14 First Line: Farewell! farewell! farewell! Lyrics: 1 Farewell! farewell! farewell! O loved one, long farewell! Thy heart is chilled in death, Gone is thy fleeting breath, Thine arms all pow'rless lie, And closed thy beaming eye. Alas, beloved, Thou'rt gone, Death claims thee for his own! Farewell! farewell! farewell! Farewell! farewell! farewell! 2 Farewell! farewell! farewell! Brother in grace, farewell! Thy work of life is o'er, Thou'rt gone to yonder shore, Passed on the solemn bourne, Whence none e'er more return, Land where the pris'ners rest, Where troubles all have ceas'd; Farewell! farewell! farewell! Farewell! farewell! farewell! 3 Farewell! farewell! farewell! But only short farewell! We're all for Death's land bound, Others will soon come 'round, And bid us sad farewell! How soon there's none can tell! Belov'd, we'll meet thee soon! We're passing one by one; O then a short farewell! O then a short farewell! Topics: Funeral Used With Tune: [Farewell! farewell! farewell]
