How awful is thy chast'ning rod!

Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77:11-20 Lyrics: 11 "How awful is thy chast'ning rod! (May thy own children say) The great, the wise, the dreadful God! How holy is his way!" 12 I’ll meditate his works of old, Who reigns in heav'n above, I’ll hear his ancient wonders told, And learn to trust his love. 13 He saw the house of Joseph lie With Egypt’s yoke opprest; Long he delay'd to hear their cry, Nor gave his people rest. 14 The sons of pious Jacob seem'd Abandon'd to their foes; But his almighty arm redeem'd The nation that he chose. 15 From slavish chains he sets them free They follow where he calls; He bade them venture thro' the deep, And made the waves their walls. 16 The waters saw thee, mighty God, The waters saw thee come; Backward they fled, and frighted stood, To make thine armies room. 17 Strange was thy journey thro' the sea, Thy footsteps, Lord, unknown; Terrors attend the wond'rous way That brings thy mercies down. 18 [Thy voice with terror in the sound Thro' clouds and darkness broke; All heav’n in lightning shone around, And earth with thunder shook. 19 Thine arrows thro' the skies were hurl'd, How glorious is the Lord! Surprise and tremb'ling seiz'd the world, And all his saints ador'd. 20 He gave them water from the rock; And safe by Moses’ hand, Thro' a dry desert led his flock To Canaan's promis'd land.] Topics: Comfort derived from ancient providence

Hallowed Memories

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77 First Line: I thought upon the days of old Lyrics: 1 I thought upon the days of old, The years departed long, I held communion with my heart, By night recalled my song. My heart inquired with anxious care, Will God forever spurn? Shall we no more His favor see? Will mercy ne'er return? 2 Forever shall His promise fail? Has God forgotten grace? Has He withdrawn His tender love, In anger hid His face? These doubts are my infirmity, My thoughts at once reply; I call back years of God's right hand, The years of God Most High. 3 I will commemorate, O Lord, Thy wondrous deeds of old, And meditate upon Thy works Of pow'r and grace untold. O God, most holy is Thy way, Most perfect, good, and right; Thou art the only living God, The God of wondrous might. How shall I sing that majesty

Author: John Mason, 1646-1694 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 40 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77:19 Lyrics: 1 How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I? 2 Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face: I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. 3 Enlighten with faith's light my heart, inflame it with love's fire; then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. They sing, because thou art their sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun there alleluias be. 4 How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep: thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere.
