Hark! the Glad Sound!

Author: Philip Doddridge Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 820 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 11:2-6 First Line: Hark! the glad sound! The Savior comes! Lyrics: 1 Hark! the glad sound! The Savior comes! The Savior promised long! Let ev’ry heart prepare a throne, and ev’ry voice a song. On him the Spirit largely poured exerts its sacred fire, wisdom and might, and zeal and love, his holy breast inspire. 2 He comes the pris’ners to release, in Satan’s bondage held. The gates of brass before him burst, the iron fetters yield. He comes the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure, and with the treasures of his grace to enrich the humble poor. 3 His silver trumpets publish loud the day of jubilee. Our debts are all remitted now, he sets the people free. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, thy welcome shall proclaim, and heav’n’s eternal arches ring with thy beloved name. When the King Shall Come Again

Author: Christopher M. Idle, b. 1938 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 20 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 11:2-6 Lyrics: 1 When the King shall come again, all his pow'r revealing, splendor shall announce his reign, life and joy and healing, earth no longer in decay, hope no more frustrated. This is God's redemption day longingly awaited. 2 In the desert trees take root, fresh from his creation; plants and flow'rs and sweetest fruit join the celebration. Rivers spring up from the earth, barren lands adorning. Valleys, this is your new birth; mountains, greet the morning! 3 Strengthen feeble hands and knees, fainting hearts be cheerful! God, who comes for such as these, seeks and saves the fearful. Deaf ears, hear the silent tongues sing away their weeping; blind eyes, see the lifeless ones walking, running, leaping. 4 There God's highway shall be seen where no roaring lion, nothing evil or unclean Walks the road to Zion. Ransomed people, homeward bound, all your praises voicing, see your Lord with glory crowned; share in his rejoicing! Topics: Advent Used With Tune: GAUDEAMUS PARITER

Thou Camest Down from Heaven on High

Uphold us in the evil hour, And from his might release us! His kingdom is a stronghold still, And legions hearken to his will. 4 But O, before Thy Word, dear Lord, The prince of darkness trembles! He quails before that two-edged Sword When Thine armed host assembles! O mighty Word, how great thy power! Thou art our refuge, shield, and tower. Amen. When John in prison came to hear

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 11:2-11 Lyrics: 1 When John in prison came to hear How great the works of Jesus were, Sent his Disciples for to know Their Saviour Christ, and own him too. 2 When they to Christ enquiring came, He bid them go to John again And shew to him where they had been, And tell the wonders they had seen. 3 The blind are made to see the light, The dead to feel his pow'r and might; The deaf to hear the dumb to talk, The lepres cleans'd, the lame to walk. 4 The poor they hear the gospel sound, Which heals the soul of every wound; They learn to know the way of peace, The way to endless happiness. 5 How happy and how bless'd are they Who know that Jesus is the way, They bear the cross and are resign'd To follow Christ with heart and mind. 6 Should we not praise the Lord our king? Who did salvation to us bring, Who pities men the fallen race, And came to make them heirs of grace. Topics: Third Sunday in Advent For the Gospel

Once in Royal David's City

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Appears in 407 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 11:2-11 Lyrics: 1 Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. 2 He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall. With the poor and mean and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy. 3 Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him, but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high, when, like stars, his children crowned all in white shall gather round. Lamb of God, to Thee We Raise

Author: William Edgar Enman (1869-1950) Meter: 7.7.7.7 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Matthew 11:2-11 Lyrics: 1 Lamb of God, to thee we raise hymns of holy love and praise for the saint and prophet born to be herald of the morn. 2 Like the morning star he rose, thine appearing to disclose; like an ensign lifted high, he declared thy kingdom nigh. 3 Filled with grace and sanctity from his blest nativity, he, the new Elias, came bearing zeal's most sacred flame. 4 Kinsman of the King divine, greatest of the prophet's line, blest forerunner of the Lord, who his praises can record? 5 Mighty preacher, by whose word souls to penitence were stirred those who long in sin had strayed then the call divine obeyed. 6 Make us, Lord, like him to be fearless witnesses for thee; faithful unto death be found, and at last by thee be crowned. Topics: John the Baptist Used With Tune: LÜBECK
