Psalm 92 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 778 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 92 First Line: Sweet is the work, my God, my King Lyrics: Sweet is the work, my God, my King, To praise thy name, give thanks and sing, To show thy love by morning light, And talk of all thy truth at night. Sweet is the day of sacred rest, No mortal cares shall seize my breast; O may my heart in tune be found, Like David's harp of solemn sound! My heart shall triumph in my Lord, And bless his works, and bless his word; Thy works of grace, how bright they shine! How deep thy counsels! how divine! Fools never raise their thoughts so high; Like brutes they live, like brutes they die; Like grass they flourish, till thy breath Blast them in everlasting death. But I shall share a glorious part When grace hath well refined my heart; And fresh supplies of joy are shed, Like holy oil, to cheer my head. Sin (my worst enemy before) Shall vex my eyes and ears no more; My inward foes shall all be slain, Nor Satan break my peace again. Then shall I see, and hear, and know All I desired or wished below; And every power find sweet employ In that eternal world of joy. You, O LORD, on high exalted, reign forevermore in might; all your enemies shall perish, sin be banished from your sight. 3 But the good shall live before you, planted in your dwelling place, fruitful trees and ever verdant, nourished by your boundless grace. Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 114 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 92:12-15 First Line: Lord, 'tis a pleasant thing to stand Lyrics: Lord, 'tis a pleasant thing to stand In gardens planted by thine hand; Let me within thy courts be seen, Like a young cedar, fresh and green. There grow thy saints in faith and love, Blest with thine influence from above; Not Lebanon with all its trees Yields such a comely sight as these. The plants of grace shall ever live; (Nature decays, but grace must thrive;) Time, that doth all things else impair, Still makes them flourish strong and fair. Psalm 92: To render thanks unto the Lord

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 92 First Line: To render thanks unto the Lord Lyrics: 1To render thanks unto the Lord it is a comely thing, And to thy name, O thou most High, due praise aloud to sing. 2Thy loving-kindness to shew forth when shines the morning light; And to declare thy faithfulness with pleasure ev’ry night. 3On a ten-stringed instrument, upon the psaltery, And on the harp with solemn sound, and grave sweet melody. 4For thou, Lord, by thy mighty works hast made my heart right glad; And I will triumph in the works which by thine hands were made. 5How great, Lord, are thy works! each thought of thine a deep it is: 6A brutish man it knoweth not; fools understand not this. 7When those that lewd and wicked are spring quickly up like grass, And workers of iniquity do flourish all apace; It is that they for ever may destroyed be and slain; 8But thou, O Lord, art the most High, for ever to remain. 9For, lo, thine enemies, O Lord, thine en’mies perish shall; The workers of iniquity shall be dispersed all. 10But thou shalt, like unto the horn of th’ unicorn, exalt My horn on high: thou with fresh oil anoint me also shalt. 11Mine eyes shall also my desire see on mine enemies; Mine ears shall of the wicked hear that do against me rise. 12But like the palm-tree flourishing shall be the righteous one; He shall like to the cedar grow that is in Lebanon. 13Those that within the house of God are planted by his grace, They shall grow up, and flourish all in our God’s holy place. 14And in old age, when others fade, they fruit still forth shall bring; They shall be fat, and full of sap, and aye be flourishing; 15To shew that upright is the Lord: he is a rock to me; And he from all unrighteousness is altogether free.

How Good It Is to Thank the LORD

Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 92 Lyrics: 1 How good it is to thank the LORD, to praise your name with tuneful chord, to show your love with morning light and tell your faithfulness each night. Yes, it is good your praise to sing and all our sweetest music bring. 2 O LORD, my song with joy expands before the wonders of your hands. How great the works that you have wrought; how deep, O LORD, your every thought! You make me glad; I sing your praise for all your wondrous works and ways. 3 Though as the grass the wicked grow, those evildoers do not know the endless ruin they will see. But God will reign eternally. All foes will fall before his might; the wicked shall be put to flight. 4 O LORD, you have exalted me with royal strength and dignity. With your anointing I am blest; your grace and favor on me rest. My eyes have seen the wicked die; my ears have heard their hopeless cry. 5 The righteous all will flourish well and in the house of God will dwell. They will be planted like a tree, will still in old age fruitful be. The LORD our God is upright, just; he is my Rock; in him I trust. How good and pleasant must it be

Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 92 Lyrics: 1 How good and pleasant must it be to thank the Lord most high; And with repeated Hymns of Praise, his Name to magnify. 2 With ev'ry Morning's early Dawn, his Goodness to relate; And of his constant Truth, each Night the glad Effects repeat. 3 To ten-string'd Instruments we'll sing, with tuneful Psalt'ries join'd, And to the Harp, with solemn Sounds, for sacred Use design'd 4 For thro' thy wondrous Works, O Lord, Thou mak'st my Heart rejoice; The Thoughts of them shall make me glad, and shout with chearful Voice. 5,6 How wond'rous are thy Works, O Lord! how deep are thy Decrees! Whose winding Tracks, in secret laid, no stupid Sinner sees. 7 He little thinks, when wicked Men, like Grass, look fresh and gay; How soon their short-liv'd Splendor must for ever pass away. 8,9 But Thou, my God, art still most High; and all thy lofty Foes, Who thought they might securely sin, shall be o'erwhelm'd with Woes. 10 Whilst Thou exalt'st my sov'reign Pow'r, and mak'st it largely spread; And with refreshing Oil anoint'st my consecrated Head. 11 I soon shall see my stubborn Foes to utter Ruin brought; And hear the dismal End of those, who have against me fought. 12 But righteous Men, like fruitful Palms, shall make a glorious Show; As Cedars that on Lebanon in stately Order grow. 13,14 These, planted in the House of God, within his Courts shall thrive; Their Vigour and their Lustre both shall in old Age revive. 15 Thus will the Lord his Justice shew; and God, my strong Defence, Shall due Rewards to all the World impartially dispense.

A Psalm or Song for the Sabbath Day

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 92 First Line: To thee, Jehovah, thanks to give Lyrics: 1 To Thee, JEHOVAH, thanks to give, It is a comely thing; And to thy Name, O Thou most High, loud hymns of praise to sing. 2 Thy loving-kindness forth to show in early morning light: And to declare thy faithfulness with pleasure every night. 3 Upon the ten string'd instrment, and pleasant psaltery; Upon the harp with solemn sound, and high rais'd melody. 4 For Thou JEHOVAH thro' thy work Hast made me to rejoyce; And in thy handy-work will I triumph with joyful voice. 5 How wondrous are thy works, O LORD! how deep are thy decrees! 6 The stupid understand not this, nor foolish sinner sees; 7 When sinners spring as grass, and those who work iniquity Do flourish; 'tis that they may be destroy'd eternally. 8 But Thou, O LORD, as sov'reign Judge, for ever shalt remain; And Thou, most high, ev'n over all For evermore shalt reign. 9 For lo thy many foes, O LORD, thy foes shall quite decay; And all who work iniquity shall be dispers'd away. 10 My horn of pow'r, as unicorns, Thou wilt exalt on high; And with fresh oyl, from time to time, anointed be shall I: 11 The downfall of my spiteful foes, mine eyes shall see: mine ear Of ill men who against me rise the fall shall also hear. [3 Part] 12 But like the palm tree flourishing, shall be the righteous one; He shall be like the cedar tree that grows on Lebanon. 13 They that within JEHOVAH's house happily planted are, Within the court-yards of our God shall greatly flourish there. 14 Their fruit they shall when they are grey, continue forth to bring; They shall in fatness grow, and they shall still be flourishing. 15 To show JEHOVAH upright is; He is a rock to me; And that He from unrighteousness is altogether free.

Bonum est

Author: J. H. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 92 First Line: It is a thing both good and meet Lyrics: 1 It is a thing both good and meet to praise the highest Lord: And to thy Name, O thou most High, to sing with one accord. 2 To shew the kindnesse of the Lord, betime ere day be light: And eke declare his truth abroad, when it doth draw to night. 3 On a ten stringed instruments, on Lute and Harp so sweet: With all the mirth you can invent, of instruments most meet. 4 For thou hast made me to rejoyce, in things so wrought by thee: And I have joy in heart and voice, thy handy-works to see. 5 O Lord, how glorious and how great, are all thy works so stout! So deeply are thy counsels set, that none can trie them out. 6 The man unwise hath not the wit, these things to passe to bring: And all such fooles are nothing fit, to understand this thing. 7 When so the wicked at their will, as grasse do spring full fast: They when they flourish in their ill, for ever shall be wast. 8 But thou art mighty Lord most High, and thou dost raigne therefore, In every time eternally, both now and evermore. 9 For why? O Lord, behold and see, behold thy foes I say, How all that work iniquity, shall perish and decay. 10 But thou like as an Unicorn shalt lift mine horne on hie" With fresh and new prepared oyle thine oynted King am I. 11 And of my foes before mine eyes shall see the fall and shame Of all that up against me rise, mine eares shall heare the same. 12 The just shall flourish up on high, as Date-trees bud and blow, And as the Cedars multiply, in Libanus that grow. 13 For they are planted in the place, and dwelling of our God: Within his courts they spring apace, and flourish all abroad. 14 And in their age much fruit shal bring both fat and well beseen And pleasantly both bud and spring with bowes and branches green. 15 To shew that God is good and just, and upright in his will: He is my rock, my hope, and trust, in him there is none ill.
