Love divine, all loves excelling

Author: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,863 hymnals Scripture: 2 Peter 3:14 Lyrics: 1 Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. 2 Come, almighty to deliver; let us all thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. 3 Finish then thy new creation: pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee, changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise. O God, Our Help in Ages Past

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,239 hymnals Scripture: 2 Peter 3:8 Lyrics: 1 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home! 2 Under the shadow of thy throne thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defense is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone; short as the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its years away, they fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home! It came upon the midnight clear

Author: Edmund Hamilton Sears (1810-1876) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 870 hymnals Scripture: 2 Peter 3:13 Lyrics: 1 It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to you from heaven's all-gracious King!" The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled: and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o'er its Babel-sounds the blessèd angels sing. 3 But with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long: beneath the angels' hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong: and warring humankind hears not the love-song which they bring: oh, hush the noise and still the strife to hear the angels sing. 4 And you, beneath life's crushing load whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow, look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing: oh, rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. 5 For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold, when, with the ever-rolling years, still dawns the Age of Gold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling, and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing. In the bleak midwinter

Author: Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894) Meter: Irregular Appears in 86 hymnals Scripture: 2 Peter 3:10 Lyrics: 1 In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone: snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. 2 Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. 3 Enough for him whom cherubim worship night and day, a breastful of milk and a mangerful of hay: enough for him whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore. 4 Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air, but only his mother, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the Beloved with a kiss. 5 What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb, if I were a wise man I would do my part, yet what I can I give him, give my heart. Without Spot and Blameless

Author: William G. Schell Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.8.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: 2 Peter 3:14 First Line: I'll rise at early morning hour Lyrics: 1 I’ll rise at early morning hour, With first effulgent rays, While nature’s songsters in the bow’r, Send up their Maker’s praise; I’ll bow before my God so dear, And tarry till my heart shall hear The Spirit’s witness sweet and clear: “Without spot and blameless.” 2 While proud in heart, at bright midday, Can find no time for prayer, My thoughts shall soar from earth away, To heaven, bright and fair: Around the fam’ly altar knelt, My heart with gratitude will melt, Till blest assurance shall be felt, “Without spot and blameless.” 3 And when the pleasant evening air Is dusky with the night, My soul shall turn to God in prayer, In heaven’s golden light; I’ll linger at the great white throne, Until the thoughts of God are known, And He shall claim me for His own, “Without spot and blameless.” 4 With God’s approval on my soul My body sinks to rest, No doubts nor waves of trouble roll Across my peaceful breast; And through the night that hand so mild Protects from storms and billows wild His helpless, trusting, loving child, “Without spot and blameless.” Used With Tune: [I'll rise at early morning hour] Text Sources: Timeless Truths (http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/Without_Spot_and_Blameless); Faith Publishing House, Evening Light Songs, 1949, edited 1987 (193); The Gospel Trumpet Company, Select Hymns, 1911 (383)

Author: C. Wesley Appears in 63 hymnals Scripture: 2 Peter 3:10 Lyrics: 1 Stand, th' Omnipotent decree, Jehovah's will be done! Nature's end we wait to see, And hear her final groan. Let this earth dissolve, and blend In death the wicked and the just; Let those pond'rous orbs descend, And grind us into dust. 2 Rests secure the righteous man; At his Redeemer's beck, Sure t' emerge and rise again, And mount above the wreck; Lo! the heavenly spirit towers Like flames o'er nature's funeral pyre; Triumphs in immortal powers, And claps his wings of fire. 3 Nothing that the just to lose By worlds on worlds destroyed; Far beneath his feet he views, With smiles, the flaming void; Sees this universe renewed-- The grand millennial reign begun; Shouts, with all the sons of God, Around the eternal throne. 4 Resting in this glorious hope, To be at last restored, Yield we now our bodies up To earthquake, plague, or sword; Listening for the call divine, The latest trumpet of the seven, Soon our soul and form shall join, And both fly up to heaven. Before the throne of God above

Author: Charitie L. De Chenez (1841-1923) Appears in 57 hymnals Scripture: 2 Peter 3:5 Lyrics: 1 Before the throne of God above I have a strong, a perfect plea, a great High Priest, whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, my name is written on his heart: I know that while in heaven he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart. 2 When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look, and see him there who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Saviour died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God the just is satisfied to look on him and pardon me. 3 Behold him there! the risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless righteousness, the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace! One with himself, I cannot die; my soul is purchased by his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Saviour and my God. E’er since our fathers slept in dust, no change has reached our ear. Years rolled on years successive glide, since first the world began, And on the tide of time still floats, secure, the bark of man. 148 Thus speaks the scoffer; but his words conceal the truth he knows, That from the waters’ dark abyss the earth at first arose. But when the sons of men began with one consent to stray, At Heav’n’s command a deluge swept the godless race away. A diff’rent fate is now prepared for Nature’s trembling frame; Soon shall her orbs be all enwrapt in one devouring flame. Reserved are sinners for the hour when to the gulf below, Armed with the hand of sov’reign pow’r, the judge consigns his foe. Though now, ye just! the time appears protracted, dark, unknown, An hour, a day, a thousand years, to heav’n’s great Lord are one. Still all may share his sov’reign grace, in ev’ry change secure; The meek, the suppliant contrite race, shall find his mercy sure. The contrite race he counts his friends forbids the suppliant’s fall; Condemns reluctant, but extends the hope of grace to all. Yet as the night-wrapped thief who lurks to seize th’ expected prize, Thus steals the hour when Christ shall come, and thunder rend the skies. Then at the loud, the solemn peal, the heav’ns shall burst away; The elements shall melt in flame, at Nature’s final day. Since all this frame of things must end, as Heav’n has so decreed, How wise our inmost thoughts to guard, and watch o’er ev’ry deed; Expecting calm th’ appointed hour, when, Nature’s conflict o’er, A new and better world shall rise, where sin is known no more.
