Author: Gerhard Tersteegen; John Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 265 hymnals Matching Instances: 9 Lyrics: Thou hidden love of God, whose height, Whose depth unfathomed no man knows: I see from far thy beauteous light, Inly I sigh for thy repose: My heart is pained, nor can it be At rest, till it find rest in thee. Is there a thing beneath the sun That strives with thee my heart to share? Ah! tear it thence, and reign alone, The Lord of every motion there. Then shall my heart from earth be free, When it hath found repose in thee. O hide this self from me, that I No more, but Christ in me, may live! My base affections crucify, Nor let one favourite sin survive; In all things nothing may I see, Nothing desire, or seek, but thee. Each moment draw from earth away My heart, that lowly waits thy call! Speak to my inmost soul, and say I am thy love, thy God, thy all! To feel thy power, to hear thy voice, To taste thy love, be all my choice! Amen. Topics: Sundays after Trinity; Sundays after Trinity The Divine Love Used With Tune: ST. FINBAR

But meekness, truth, And duty marked each step He trod; And love to man, and love to God. 3 Jesus! my Saviour, Master, King, Who didst for me the burden bear, While saints in heaven Thy glory sing, Let me on earth Thy illness wear: Mine be the path Thy feet have trod; Duty and love to man and God. Author: Edward Bevir, 1847-1922 Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Matching Instances: 2 Lyrics: 1. O Lord of glory! who couldst leave The height supreme in death to lie, What tongue shall sing, what heart conceive, The love divine that made Thee die? Bought with a price, for ever Thine, We break this bread, and drink this wine. 2. But here on earth, Thou wast alone Proclaimer of this love to men; Upon the cross, ’twas fully known, For God came forth to meet us then; Rent from above, the parted veil, Announced to all that wondrous tale. 3. But ris’n, the firstborn from the dead, Triumphant hast Thou entered in; The glorious Man, the living head, Thrice worthy Thou our hearts to win: In Thy blest face all glories shine, And there we gaze on love divine. O Jesus, full of truth and grace, More full of grace than I of sin; Yet once again I seek thy face: Open thine arms and take me in; And freely my backslidings heal, And love the faithless sinner still. Rise, All Who Seek the Crucified

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1. Rise, all who seek the Crucified, The God that once for sinners died, With lifted voice and heart adore, Chasing our griefs, and sins, and fears, The Sun of Righteousness appears, Appears, to set in blood no more. 2. To death delivered in our stead, For us He rises from the dead, And life to all His members brings; He gives us, while He soars above, The dew of grace, the balm of love, And drops salvation from His wings. 3. This day the Scripture is fulfilled, The Father now His Son has sealed, And owned Him for His Son with power; God from the belly of the earth Hath called Him forth to second birth, Nor let the greedy deep devour. 4. Cast for our sins into the deep, His life hath saved the sinking ship, His life for ours a ransom given; But lo! on the third joyful morn Our Jonas doth for us return Emerging from His tomb to Heaven. Who knows how near my end may be?

Author: Catherine Winkworth; Countess Emilia Juliana Appears in 26 hymnals Matching Instances: 1 Lyrics: 1 Who knows how near my end may be? Time speeds away, and death comes on. How swiftly, ah, how suddenly, May death be here, and life be gone! My God, for Jesus' sake I pray Thy peace may bless my dying day. 2 O Father, cover all my sins With Jesus' merits, who alone The pardon that I covet wins, And makes His long-sought Rest my own. My God, for Jesus' sake I pray Thy peace may bless my dying day. 3 Then death may come or tarry yet; I know in Christ I perish not. He never will His own forget; He gives me robes without a spot. My God, for Jesus' sake I pray Thy peace may bless my dying day. 4 And thus I live in God at peace, And die without a thought of fear, Content to take what God decrees, For through His Son my faith is clear; His grace shall be in death my stay, And peace shall bless my dying day. O Hadst Thou Known, In This Thy Day

Author: Charles L. Ford Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Matching Instances: 1 First Line: O hadst thou known, in this day Lyrics: 1 "O hadst thou known, in this day, The things belonging to thy peace!" He spake, and wept. Adown the way The rude procession’s ranks increase: With shout and song, as on He rode, Children and men their garments strowed. 2 And see, that host His pathway lines With boughs, as in triumphal hour: Some poor ephemeral splendor shines, Some hint of sublunary power, For Him who naught of grandeur needs From shouting hosts or prancing steeds. 3 Was this a time for mist of tears, When sunshine brightened o’er His way, When pæn-praises filled His ears, And Salem seemed at last to pay Her homage due, erewhile refused— Why wept He as He paused and mused? 4 What were a people’s shouts to Him? Earth’s proudest pomp, her kingliest crown? He saw the light of Israel dim, Twice dead the blossom of renown; And hollow rites for service paid To Him who claims the heart He made. 5 And thus, if fancy dare explore The thoughts that stirred His soul to weep, Sad voices, as from some far off shore Rolls the low murmur of the deep, Came o’er Him—all the future vast Blent with long echoes of the past. 6 "Bright as a star in heaven’s own blue, Light of the lands, I saw thee shine; Kings from afar thy brightness knew, The gifts of Sheba decked thy shrine: Thou were a royal stone and gem Set on My heart, Jerusalem! 7 "I see thee as thou sat’st of yore, A queen in beauty; but thy gold Is tarnished; lovers come no more To seek thee; from thy hand hath rolled Thy scepter, laid in dust; and now The conqueror’s brand is on thy brow. 8 "But he who dares thy doom portray, Self-doomed, thy sacrifice expires; Build, as of old, their tombs ye slay; Fill up the measure of your sires; Nor deem thy blackest crime shall stem Earth’s tide of woes, Jerusalem! 9 "But woe to her who scorns her Lord, The land that crucifies her king! I see the alien armies poured Around her—hear the anguish ring! Your house lies desolate—ye roam A byword, yearning for your home. 10 "I go where sits in glory crowned Each herald of the Lord ye slew; And Gentile tongues His praise shall sound In seats of joy prepared for you: Thy name, thy place, is given to them, My bride, My new Jerusalem!" 11 But hark! the thrilling shout, more nigh, Peals on the air with joyous glee; They chant His mighty works, and cry, "This is the Christ of Galilee!" In lowliest state He moves along, And Salem’s gate receives the throng. Used With Tune: ST. CATHERINE Text Sources: Lyra Christi by Charles L. Ford (London: Houlston and Sons, 1874)
