Representative Text

1 I have heard of a country immortal,
Where the feet of the angels have trod;
Of a house having many a mansion,
In the bright morning land of our God;
And I’ve wondered when thinking of heaven,
What they have in that city on high;
But its glory, oh! I shall behold it,
While the ages eternal go by.

Refrain:
I am longing, often longing,
For that beautiful city on high,
Where they know not sin nor sorrow
While the ages eternal go by.

2 ‘Tis with gold which like glass is transparent,
That the street of that city is paved;
Where the things that defile can not enter,
But the nations of them which are saved.
And no night ever falls on that city,
There’s no sun, neither moon in its sky;
But the glory of Jesus shall light it,
While the ages eternal go by. [Refrain]

3 We are seeking that heavenly country,
In the way that our fathers have trod;
We are seeking the city of refuge,
Where the builder and maker is God.
O’er its meadows and mountains immortal,
‘Mid the glories that nevermore die,
There’ll be freedom from sin and from sorrow,
While the ages eternal go by. [Refrain]
