Representative Text

1.
The faithless world promiscuous flows,
Enrapt in fancy's vision,
Allured by sounds, beguiled by show,
And empty dreams; they scarcely know
There is a brighter heaven.

Giles, Charles, an American Methodist minister, was born near Fort Griswold, Connecticut, Feb. 22, 1783, entered the ministry in 1805, and died at Syracuse, N. Y., Aug. 30, 1867. His hymn, "The fading world promiscuous flows" (Heaven Anticipated), is found, in 6 stanzas of 5 lines, in James Gallagher's New Selection, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1835; and in 8 stanzas of 5 lines. From it the hymn, "This world is poor from shore to shore," in Beecher's Plymouth Collection, 1855; Dr. Hatfield's Church Hymn Book, 1872, and others, is taken. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)  Go to person page >
