1 With Thine own pity, Savior, see
The thronged and darkening way!
We go to win the lost to Thee,
O help us, Lord, we pray!

2 Thou bidd'st us go with Thee to stand
Against hell’s marshalled powers;
And heart to heart, and hand to hand,
To make Thine honor ours.

3 Teach Thou our lips of Thee to speak,
Of Thy great love to tell;
Till they who wander far shall seek
And find and serve Thee well.

4 O’er all the world Thy Spirit send,
And make Thy goodness known,
Till earth and heaven together blend
Their praises at Thy throne.

Author: Ray Palmer

Ray Palmer (b. Little Compton, RI, 1808; d. Newark, NJ, 1887) is often considered to be one of America's best nineteenth-century hymn writers. After completing grammar school he worked in a Boston dry goods store, but a religious awakening prodded him to study for the ministry. He attended Yale College (supporting himself by teaching) and was ordained in 1835. A pastor in Congregational churches in Bath, Maine (1835-1850), and Albany, New York (1850-1865), he also served as secretary of the American Congregational Union (1865-1878). Palmer was a popular preacher and author, writing original poetry as well as translating hymns. Credited to Wilhelm Schulthes, 1871, in The Hymnal (1916). Reviews of his works in The Musical Times in 1871 include an "Ave Maria" for organ/piano and "O Salutaris" for soprano and choir. These pieces appear to be exceptionally rare and are not readily available for study. —Chris Fenner
