52. A Prayer

1 Loving Saviour, kind and gentle,
Thou our hope and refuge art;
Troubles spiritual and mental
Still assail each vital part.
Thou, O Saviour, from the manger,
To the cruel, bitter cross;
Sufferedst the pain and danger,
That our lives upheave and toss.

2 Impotent are we in weakness,
Tempted oft, we often fall;
But our Saviour, in Thy meekness,
Thou hast met and conquered all.
Help us, Saviour, by Thy power,
Thou, O Lord, art all our trust;
Make the enemy to cower,
Shrink before Thee like the dust.

3 Thou hast bought our soul’s redemption,
Thou hast drain’d the bitter cup;
From the tempter grant exemption;
Lord protect and lift us up.
Jesus, in the night of sorrow,
Guide us by Thy loving hand;
Lead us to the dawning morrow,
With the pure to take our stand.
