32. The Christ story

1 A manger, a mother, a baby so fair;
The shepherds, the angels, the song on the air;
The wise men, the star-gleam, the wearisome way;
The gold and the incense, love’s homage to pay.

Refrain:
No room in the inn for the dear Saviour’s birth,
No room in the hearts of the great ones of earth,
Yet angels acclaim Him, while shepherds adore,
And wise men proclaim Him the King ever more.

2 A sinner, a Saviour, a cross on the hill,
A garden, a pray’r, and a bending the will,
The nail-prints, the spear-thrust, the night of the tomb;
The morning of glory to scatter earth’s gloom. [Refrain]

3 How simple the story, how soon it is told,
This story of Jesus which never grows old;
From glory to Calv’ry, love seeking its own,
A manger, a cross, and a tomb and a throne. [Refrain]

4 Oh Jesus, my Saviour, for me was the loss,
The “thorn-road,” the garden, “the way of the cross,
My glory forever this only shall be,
To sorrow and suffer and labor for Thee. [Refrain]
