61. When overwhelm'd with grief

1 When, overwhelm'd with grief,
My heart within me dies,
Helpless and far from all relief,
To heav’n I lift mine eyes.

2 Oh lead me to the rock
That’s high above my head,
And make the covert of thy wings
My shelter and my shade.

3 Within thy presence, Lord,
For ever I’ll abide;
Thou art the tow'r of my defence,
The refuge where I hide.

4 Thou givest me the lot
Of those that fear thy name;
If endless life be their reward,
I shall possess the same.

Part II.

5 My soul of thy protection sure;
Against her foes shall rest secure;
For thou, O God, hast heard my vows,
And brought me joyful to thy house.

6 With all thy saints I'll strive to sing
The glories of my heav'nly king,
Whom thou in mercy didst ordain,
Should o'er thy chosen people reign.

7 This king shall live for ever blest,
And give his people peace and rest;
His years shall last, and God will own
His righteous sceptre and his throne.

8 O let thy truth prepare the way,
In mercy, Lord, extend his sway;
Thus we'll devote our future days,
To pay our vows and sing thy praise.
