96. He Came to Call the Sinners

1 Jesus said, “I am not come to call the righteous,”—
It was not the Pharisee He justified;
But the broken-hearted publican, repentant,
Had his pleading cry for mercy satisfied.

Refrain:
O He came to call the sinners—
Just the lost and hopeless sinners,—
Yes, He came to call the sinners gone astray.
And if you are such a sinner—
Just a poor and helpless sinner—
He is calling, calling, calling you today.

2 Jesus said, “I am not come to call the righteous,”—
Sinners only are received at Calvary;
To the dying captive bound and bruised by Satan,
He has promised life and health and liberty. [Refrain]

3 Jesus said, “I am not come to call the righteous,”—
‘Tis to guilty, fallen souls who cannot rise,
He is whisp’ring, “For your many sins, ‘like crimson,”
I have offered one eternal sacrifice.” [Refrain]

4 Then, if you are just a sinner, He entreats you
To believe the pardon purchased by His blood:
For your sins He died, He rose, He lives forever;
And in Him you are accepted by your God. [Refrain]
