[Winchell] has had a varied career which included seven years as a field officer of the Salvation Army, experience as a public school teacher, and service as a pastor of Congregational Churches. He has long been interested in children and has encouraged creative work by them, particularly in the field of poetry and drama composed by them. This included a "Project Talent" in the fifth and sixth grades of the public schools. In 1965 he received a Freedoms Foundation award for helping to contribute to a better understanding of the American way of life.
