Martin Shaw

1875 - 1958 Person Name: Martin Shaw, 1875-1958 Meter: 10.11.11.12 Arranger of "SLANE" in Common Praise (1998) Martin F. Shaw was educated at the Royal College of Music in London and was organist and choirmaster at St. Mary's, Primrose Hill (1908-1920), St. Martin's in the Fields (1920-1924), and the Eccleston Guild House (1924-1935). From 1935 to 1945 he served as music director for the diocese of Chelmsford. He established the Purcell Operatic Society and was a founder of the Plainsong and Medieval Society and what later became the Royal Society of Church Music. Author of The Principles of English Church Music Composition (1921), Shaw was a notable reformer of English church music. He worked with Percy Dearmer (his rector at St. Mary's in Primrose Hill); Ralph Vaughan Williams, and his brother Geoffrey Shaw in publishing hymnals such as Songs of Praise (1925, 1931) and the Oxford Book of Carols (1928). A leader in the revival of English opera and folk music scholarship, Shaw composed some one hundred songs as well as anthems and service music; some of his best hymn tunes were published in his Additional Tunes in Use at St. Mary's (1915). Jack Schrader

Songs and Hymns for Blended Worship JACK SCHRADER (b. 1942), arranger, composer, conductor, vocalist, and organist/pianist, is past editor with Hope Publishing Company, retiring in January of 2009. His association with Hope began in 1978. A 1964 graduate of Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, where he majored in Voice and Organ, he also received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Nebraska (1966). Further studies in theology culminated in Jack's ordination by the Evangelical Free Church of America (1975). Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he now resides in Wheaton, Illinois, with his wife, Karen. They have three children, Beth, Jonathan and Joel, and currently three grandchildren. Jack is the best selling choral composer in the Hope catalog. In addition to choral music Jack has published collections for keyboardists, instrumentalists and vocal soloists. He was a member of the editorial committee for Hope's most recent hymnal, WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001), in which he has 24 hymn credits. Edwin Barnes

1864 - 1930 Meter: 10.11.11.12 Composer of "LONDON (Barnes)" Edwin Barnes was born on March 15, 1864 in Shirley, Southampton, England. In 1881, Barnes moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, to attend Battle Creek College and play the organ at the Seventh-day Adventist church there. He eventually served as head of the Battle Creek College music department for almost 20 years. He also formed an amateur music club, helped found an annual spring music festival in Battle Creek, ran the Battle Creek Conservatory of Music (until 1926), and was organist and choir director at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek. Michael Hewlett

David Schwoebel

b. 1957 Person Name: David Schwoebel Meter: 10.11.11.12 Composer of "COURTNEY" in Celebrating Grace Hymnal David Schwoebel is Minister of Music/Composer in Residence at Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. He is a graduate of McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Voice and Organ Performance, and a Master of Church Music with an emphasis in Composition. Prior to beginning his ministry at Derbyshire in January 1997, David served churches in his hometown of Belleville, Illinois, Montgomery, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia. As an ordained minister, David administrates and oversees a comprehensive music ministry of six choral organizations, four handbell choirs, and a 32-piece orchestra. His energetic, hands-on approach to ministry finds him working each week with people of all ages, encouraging and equipping them to discover and develop their varied musical talents and skills. The MICHELLE hymn tune included in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal is named for David's wife, Michelle. The BRITTANY, ASHLEY, AND COURTNEY hymn tunes, named for their three daughters, and the ROSE MARY, HENDRICKS AVENUE, as well as an arrangement of IRBY hymn tunes, are included in the Celebrating Grace hymnal. Stanley L. Osborne

1907 - 2000 Person Name: Stanley L. Osborne, 1907- Meter: 10.11.11.12 Composer of "AVONLEA" in The Hymn Book of the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada Stanley Llewellen Osborne, studied music at the University Toronto, and later, theology at Emmanuel College, and was ordained a United Church Minister in 1932. Dr. Osborne was co-editor of the United Church's Canadian Youth Hymnal (1939), and full-time secretary to the joint committee of the United Church and the Anglican Church of Canada for The Hymn Book, which they published together in 1971.
