Conviction of sin by the law

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 128 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:24 First Line: Lord, how secure my conscience was Lyrics: 1 Lord, how secure my conscience was, And felt no inward dread! I was alive without the law, And thought my sins were dead. 2 My hopes of heav'n were firm and bright; But since the precept came With a convincing pow'r and light, I find how vile I am. 3 My guilt appear'd but small before, Till terribly I saw How perfect, holy, just, and pure, Was thy eternal law. 4 Then felt my soul the heavy load, My sins reviv'd again; I had provok'd a dreadful God, And all my hopes were slain. 5 I'm like a helpless captive sold Under the pow'r of sin; I cannot do the good I would, Nor keep my conscience clean. 6 My God, I cry with ev'ry breath, For some kind pow'r to save, To break the yoke of sin and death, And thus redeem the slave.

God Is Working This Purpose Out

Author: Arthur C. Ainger Meter: Irregular Appears in 93 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:18-30 Lyrics: 1 God is working this purpose out, as year succeeds to year; God is working this purpose out, and the time is drawing near; nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be: when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 From utmost east to utmost west, where human feet have trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God: “Give ear to me, ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.” 3 Let us go forth in the strength of God, with the banner of Christ unfurled, that the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world. Let us all fight with sorrow and sin to set the captives free, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 4 All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed. Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed. Yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. O God of truth, whose living Word

Author: Thomas Hughes Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 75 hymnals Scripture: Romans 8:22 Lyrics: 1 O God of truth, whose living Word Upholds whate'er hath breath, Look down on thy creation, Lord, Enslaved by sin and death, 2 Set up thy standard, Lord, that we Who claim a heav'nly birth, May march with thee to smite the lies That vex thy groaning earth. 3 Ah! would we join that blest array, And follow in the might Of him, the Faithful and the True, In raiment clean and white! 4 Then, God of truth for whom we long, Thou who wilt hear our pray'r, Do thine own battle in our hearts, And slay the falsehood there. Vom freudigen Gebet
