"Glorious things"

Author: John Newton Appears in 1,288 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 125:2 First Line: Glorious things of thee are spoken Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God! He, whose word cannot be broken, Formed thee for his own abode: On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, Thou may'st smile at all thy foes. 2 See! the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love, Well supply thy sons and daughters, And all fear of want remove: Who can faint, while such a river Ever flows their thirst to assuage?-- Grace, which, like the Lord, the Giver, Never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hovering, See the cloud and fire appear For a glory and a covering, Showing that the Lord is near! Thus deriving from their banner, Light by night, and shade by day, Safe they feed upon the manna Which he gives them when they pray. When all thy mercies, O my God!

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 997 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 125 Lyrics: 1 When all thy mercies, O my God! my rising soul surveys transported with the view, I’m lost in wonder, love, and praise. 2 O how shall words, with equal warmth, the gratitude declare that glows within my ravish'd heart! but Thou canst read it there. 3 Thy providence my life sustain'd, and all my wants redrest, when in the silent womb I lay, and hung upon the breast. 4 To all my weak complaints and cries thy mercy lent an ear, ere yet my feeble thoughts had learn'd to form themselves in pray’r. 5 Unnumber'd comforts to my soul thy tender care bestow'd, before my infant heart conceiv'd from whom these comforts flow'd. 6 When in the slipp’ry paths of youth with heedless steps I ran, thine arm, unseen, convey'd me safe, and led me up to man: 7 Through hidden dangers, toils, and deaths, it gently clear'd my way; and through the pleasing snares of vice, more to be feared than they. 8 When worn with sickness, oft hast thou with health renew'd my face; and, when in sins and sorrows sunk, reviv'd my soul with grace. 9 Thy bounteous hand with worldly bliss hath made my cup run o’er; and, in a kind and faithful friend, hath doubled all my store. 10 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts my daily thanks employ; nor is the least a cheerful heart, that tastes these gifts with joy. 11 Through ev’ry period of my life thy goodness I’ll proclaim; and after death, in distant worlds, resume the glorious theme. 12 When nature fails, and day and night divide thy works no more, my ever grateful heart, O Lord, thy mercy shall adore. 13 Through all eternity to thee a joyful song I’ll raise; for, oh! eternity’s too short to utter all thy praise. Used With Tune: ST DAVID

Each blessing to my soul more dear, Because conferred by thee. 4 In every joy that crowns my days, In every pain I bear, My heart shall find delight in praise, Or seek relief in prayer. 5 When gladness wings my favored hour, Thy love my thoughts shall fill; Resigned, when storms of sorrow lower, My soul shall meet thy will. 6 My lifted eye, without a tear, The gathering storm shall see; My steadfast heart shall know no fear, That heart shall rest on thee! God is the refuge of his saints

Author: Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 461 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 125:1 Lyrics: 1 God is the refuge of his saints, When storms of sharp distress invade; Ere we can offer our complaints, Behold him present with his aid. 2 Let mountains from their seats be hurled Down to the deep, and buried there; Convulsions shake the solid world, Our faith shall never yield to fear. 3 Loud may the troubled ocean roar, In sacred peace our souls abide, While every nation, every shore, Trembles, and dreads the swelling tide. 4 There is a stream whose gentle flow Supplies the city of our God; Life, love, and joy, still gliding through, And watering our divine abode. 5 That sacred stream, thy holy word, That all our raging fear controls: Sweet peace thy promises afford, And give new strength to fainting souls. Psalm 91

Author: James Montgomery Appears in 214 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 125:2 First Line: Call Jehovah thy salvation Lyrics: 1 Call Jehovah thy salvation, Rest beneath the Almighty's shade; In his secret habitation Dwell, and never be dismayed: There no tumult can alarm thee, Thou shalt dread no hidden snare; Guile nor violence can harm thee, In eternal safeguard there. 2 From the sword, at noon-day wasting, From the noisome pestilence; In the depth of midnight, blasting, God shall be thy sure defence: Fear not thou the deadly quiver, When a thousand feel the blow; Mercy shall thy soul deliver, Though ten thousand be laid low. 3 Since, with pure and firm affection, Thou on God hast set thy love, With the wings of his protection, He will shield thee from above; Thou shalt call on him in trouble, He will hearken, he will save; Here, for grief reward thee double, Crown with life beyond the grave.
