When People Learned of Jesus Christ

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Come Away with Me #15 (1998) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Christian Community Role as teachers following Jesus' model Lyrics: When people learned of Jesus Christ, they came to hear him preach. They longed to find out for themselves what Jesus had to teach. They pondered over parables, and gave his words much thought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He turned the water into wine and multiplied the bread, becalmed the heavy, stormy seas, and even raised the dead. The people wondered at the signs and miracles he wrought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. He answered scribes and Pharisees who would with him contend. He healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and was the sinners' friend. They marveled at his prophecies, the healing that he brought, but what they most remembered was the love that Jesus taught. We may not work a miracle, fulfill a prophet's role, encourage sinners to repent, or make the wounded whole, but, as disciples, we can tell we've found what all have sought: the never-ending love of God, the love that Jesus taught. Dear God, at home, at work, at school, in all of life, we pray, help us be teachers who reveal your love for us today, that all the world may recognize the spirit that is caught when his disciples try to live the love that Jesus taught. Scripture: Matthew 23:8-10 Languages: English Tune Title: DEDICATION

For God So Loved the World

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith Hymnal: New Hymns of Hope #64 Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Christian Community First Line: "For God so loved the world" Lyrics: 1 'For God so loved the world' he sent his Son to save. Lord, may a sinner such as I receive the gift he gave. 2 'To seek and save the lost,' as Son of Man he came. Lord, at what soul-forsaken cost you bore our sin and shame. 3 'Repent, believe and come!' The kingdom is for all. Lord, give us ears to hear your word and hearts to heed your call. 4 'Fear not, for it is I!' His voice dispels the gloom. Lord, let each morning gild the sky above an empty tomb. 5 'Peace be with you,' he said, 'my peace with you I leave.' Lord, may the storms of life be stilled, our souls your peace receive. 6 'Walk while you have the light;' Lord, be yourself the Way, a path of life with glory bright to God's eternal day.
