Esther Bergen

1921 - 2005 Scripture: Isaiah 63:8-9 Translator of "For God So Loved Us" in Moravian Book of Worship Esther Bergen was born on June 18, 1921 in Morden, Manitoba, Canada. She was the daughter of a Mennonite minister and graduated from the Mennonite College Institute in Gretna, Manitoba. After teaching in several rural schools, she attended the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg. She taught music at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College, and served as Dean and Registrar at the Canadian Mennonite Bible College. She also worked as a missionary in Mexico with her husband, Menno Bergen (1956-68). She translated some 150 hymns, and composed several hymn tunes. She was a teacher, musician, poet, translator, church worker, wife, and mother. She died in on March 1, 2005 in Winnepeg. [Sources: Hustad, Donald Paul. Joy F. Patterson

Alfred M. Smith

1879 - 1971 Person Name: Alfred M. Smith, 1879-1971 Scripture: Isaiah 63:9 Composer of "SURSUM CORDA" in Christian Worship Alfred Morton Smith (1879-1971) was born in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, and studied at the University of Pennsylvania (B.S. 1901) and Philadelphia Divinity School (B.D. 1905; S.T.B. 1911). An Episcopalian, Smith was ordained a deacon (1905) and a priest (1906). After a short time in Philadelphia and Long Beach, California, he served at St. Matthias Church, Los Angeles, for ten years. He was a chaplain in the U.S. Army during World War I, returning to Philadelphia in 1919, where he spent the remainder of his career. He retired in 1955. In 1963, Smith moved to Drium Moir, Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, and in 1968 to Brigantine, New Jersey, where he remained until his death. --The Presbyterian Hymnal Companion, 1993

1869 - 1952 Person Name: Andrew L. Byers Scripture: Isaiah 63:7 Composer of "[To Thee, O Lord Jehovah]" in Timeless Truths Andrew Linnaeus Byers was born on August 26, 1869 in Albany, Illinois. Byers’ mother was song writer Nancy Byers. In 1890 he became involved with Daniel Warner & Barney Warren in evangelistic work; later joined the Gospel Trumpet publishing company as music editor for a year. He left that work because of health problems and worked as an evangelist and pastor in Idaho & Oregon before taking a pastorate in Sacramento, California, in 1934. J. H. Fillmore

1849 - 1936 Person Name: James H. Fillmore Scripture: Isaiah 63:7-9 Composer of "FILLMORE" in Celebremos Su Gloria James Henry Fillmore USA 1849-1936. Born at Cincinnati, OH, he helped support his family by running his father's singing school. He married Annie Eliza McKrell in 1880, and they had five children. After his father's death he and his brothers, Charles and Frederick, founded the Fillmore Brothers Music House in Cincinnati, specializing in publishing religious music. He was also an author, composer, and editor of music, composing hymn tunes, anthems, and cantatas, as well as publishing 20+ Christian songbooks and hymnals. He issued a monthly periodical “The music messsenger”, typically putting in his own hymns before publishing them in hymnbooks. Jessie Brown Pounds, also a hymnist, contributed song lyrics to the Fillmore Music House for 30 years, and many tunes were composed for her lyrics. He was instrumental in the prohibition and temperance efforts of the day. His wife died in 1913, and he took a world tour trip with single daughter, Fred (a church singer), in the early 1920s. After almost 40 years, he now serves as Organist Emeritus for Atlanta’s historic Central Presbyterian Church, and as Seminary Musician at Columbia Theological Seminary. He holds degrees from Florida State University and Atlanta University, and did post-graduate study with composer Richard Purvis in San Francisco. He has played recitals, worship services, and master classes across the U. S., and in England, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany.
