"Your Kingdom Come" -- On Bended Knee

Author: Frederick Lucian Hosmer (1840-1929) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 87 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 72 Lyrics: 1 "Your kingdom come" -- on bended knee the passing ages pray; and faithful souls have yearned to see on earth that kingdom's day. 2 But the slow watches of the night not less to God belong, and for the everlasting right the silent stars are strong. 3 And lo, already on the hills the flags of dawn appear. Gird up your loins, ye prophet souls, proclaim the day is near: 4 the day in whose clear-shining light all wrong shall stand revealed, when justice shall be throned with might, and every heart be healed: 5 when knowledge, hand in hand with peace, shall walk the earth abroad -- the day of perfect righteousness, the promised day of God. Lord, send thy word, and let it fly

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 72 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 72:7 Lyrics: 1 Lord, send thy word, and let it fly, Arm'd with thy Spirit's pow'r, Ten thousands shall confess its sway, And bless the saving hour. 2 Beneath the influence of thy grace, The barren wastes shall rise, With sudden greens, and fruits array'd, A blooming paradise. 3 True holiness shall strike its root In each regen'rate heart; Shall in a growth divine arise, And heavenly fruits impart. 4 Peace, with her olives crown'd, shall stretch Her wings from shore to shore; No trump shall rouse the rage of war, Nor murd'rous cannon roar. 5 Lord, for those days we wait--those days Are in thy word foretold; Fly swifter, sun and stars, and bring This promis'd age of gold! 6 Amen, with joy divine, let earth's Unnumber'd myriads cry; Amen, with joy divine, let heaven's Unnumber'd choirs reply. Before You, Lord, We Bow

Author: Francis Scott Key, 1779-1843 Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 69 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 72:3 Lyrics: 1 Before You, Lord, we bow, Our God who reigns above And rules the world below, Boundless in pow'r and love. Our thanks we bring In joy and praise, Our hearts we raise To You, our King! 2 The nation You have blest May well Your love declare, From foes and fears at rest, Protected by Your care. For this bright day, For this fair land-- Gifts of Your hand-- Our thanks we pay. 3 May ev'ry mountain height, Each vale and forest green, Shine in Your Word's pure light, And its rich fruits be seen! May ev'ry tongue Be tuned to praise And join to raise A grateful song. 4 Earth, hear your Maker's voice; Your great Redeemer own; Believe, obey, rejoice, And worship Him alone. Cast down your pride, Your sin deplore, And bow before The Crucified. 5 And when in pow'r He comes, Oh, may our native land From all its rending tombs Send forth a glorious band, A countless throng, With joy to sing To heav'n's high King Salvation's song! I hate the tempter and his charms

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 48 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 72 Lyrics: I hate the tempter and his charms, I hate his flatt'ring breath; The serpent takes a thousand forms To cheat our souls to death. He feeds our hopes with airy dreams, Or kills with slavish fear; And holds us still in wide extremes, Presumption or despair. Now he persuades, "How easy 'tis To walk the road to heav'n;" Anon he swells our sins, and cries, "They cannot be forgiv'n." [He bids young sinners "yet forbear To think of God, or death; For prayer and devotion are But melancholy breath." He tells the aged, "they must die, "And 'tis too late to pray; In vain for mercy now they cry, For they have lost their day."] Thus he supports his cruel throne By mischief and deceit, And drags the sons of Adam down To darkness and the pit. Almighty God, cut short his power, Let him in darkness dwell And that he vex the earth no more, Confine him down to hell. Lo! the destroying angel flies

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 20 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 72 Lyrics: Lo, the destroying angel flies To Pharaoh's stubborn land; The pride and flower of Egypt dies By his vindictive hand. He passed the tents of Jacob o'er, Nor poured the wrath divine; He saw the blood on every door, And blessed the peaceful sign. Thus the appointed Lamb must bleed, To break the Egyptian yoke; Thus Isr'el is from bondage freed, And 'scapes the angel's stroke. Lord, if my heart were sprinkled too With blood so rich as thine, Justice no longer would pursue This guilty soul of mine. Jesus our passover was slain, And has at once procured Freedom from Satan's heavy chain, And God's avenging sword.
